Why is Russia interested in the Ukraine, and (more important---to us selfish Americans) Why Should Americans CARE?

That second question was brought up by KFOR's FLASHPOINT; and I didn't really pay attention to the answer, but it seemed something-like "Because America signed an agreement with NATO, and NATO doesn't like Russia messing with the Ukraine; so we have AN OBLIGATION."

Do you know the specifics or the history behind the conflict?

That's why I mentioned 'us selfish Americans' in the title. I always thought Russia was 'basically a state in the U.S.S.R. (that became a country when the U.S.S.R. dissolved ... like Texas would if the U.S.A. ended).

@RebeccasFarm And I didn't know Ukraine was ALSO a former-Republic of the U.S.S.R. So it's like if the USA ended (leaving 50+ independent States) & New York decided that New Jersey ought to be part of New York.
With all the news about Russia trying to invade Ukraine, I realize that I never really differentiated between 'Russia' and 'the whole U.S.S....

It sounds mostly like Vladimir Putin should've had better friends (or -parents).
