The Ugly India is heavily indebted to Russia. Much of the debt is repayable in 2037. It is a loan without interest. So we cannot speak against Russia. Who does not know this? I do The Bad Russia claims Indian students are being held as hostages. Logically, why not. If an American, or Australian or German or Brit was held, Russians would have no compunction in shooting the bait. But Indian.. we have abstained from voting at the UN.. So killing Indians won't be fun. Not that we can take on the might of Russia and China and the US.. but there is no purpose. For Ukraine ..yes, that is an opportunity it should have considered. I would to save lives. Whoever did it, if at all, it is a masterstroke. The Good... In the past, it was the Chinese preventing us from becoming the chosen few for veto power. Now it will be the other nation. India will never be the elite in the UN security council having cowered down to its past obligations. It is as well, lessons not be to indebted would reach home.

I understand what a difficult position India has been put in. A vote either way would bring consequences that would hurt the country. The only logical choice would be to abstain. But even that brings consequences. A loss of veto power is a major blow to the strength of India. Personally, I understand why India abstained but I'm still a bit disappointed. Not as disappointed as I am with the US and it's weak stand and lack of strong leadership but still disappointed.

Switzerland decided not to abstain, even if it is a neutral country. Today our authorities explained us why sometimes you have to take a decision that could be harmful for the citizens of a country. I can understand and I cross my fingers. At least all Swiss houses have an atomic shelter.

@Vikingswest1 - We could not hide our head in the sand. We also received 2,000 Ukrainian refugees yesterday.

India had no other choice than to abstain from voting at the UN due to its financial obligations. I heard that around 35 countries have abstained from voting

@LadyDuck Obligations that could be called up. How is Russia at loss until you all come up with sanctions against us? If and when they call up the debt, we will have to hand it over in dollars. Effectively, this is debt insulated against sanctions and such madness.

@vandana7 - We all will be soon without natural gas in Europe and we are lucky if his angry stops there, once he has finished with Ukraine, he will punish all those who helped.

India is not the only country that abstain and I don't for one bit agree that it is about the status or the indebted issue but against WAR. What is there to vote? Don't you hate politics? What is there to gain or lose if you vote for or against? All these backstabbing politicians who shows the "Alright" faces but are looking for the first instance to "Stab" you when they have the opportunity. Voting for war is just like allowing the foreign troops to invade in the name of defending without carrying the name of a terrorist so to speak and guess what? Who is paying?

We live in a world where we have televisions social media and the UN. When world war i and ii were there, we had only radio, and atom bomb came at the very end. Why negotiation channels discussions etc., with transparency were not used before disrupting the lives of innocents remains the huge question and unacceptable situation in my mind. Do people really have power? Can I ask the government build my road? I can only vote for somebody and then hope that someday the guy is gonna think of repairing my road. It is just a lottery system. Many don't even bother voting. Why then should their lives be hurt. The real people to hurt are not the citizens but the politicians who don't work. Citizens work, make the country prosper. Politicians are like parasites eating away taxes in form of salaries. What have they really given to the country? If anybody needs to be punished, it is them. But they are heavily guarded. So attack helpless? Is that even fair? And is that person's opinion same as that of the politician that he is being punished for it?

I ask why should India aspire for veto power? Prestige? Political mileage , for Modi, to counter China, or anything else? I believe there are other fields where India should continue to grow and influence UNO and its functions.

It does not matter really. However, if I had that veto power, I would definitely not allow attack on Afghanistan.
