A Reason Behind A Fake Account

March 17, 2022 1:24am CST
Hello mylot. I happened to be actively engaged in a writing community in one of social medias. During my time-spent there, I notice that lots of writers use fake account as their alias. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying this is illegal. I mean, people could disguise anyway they like. But here's the thing. Yesterday I talked to a woman who made a confession. She set up an account, display a good-looking guy as a profile picture and started a persona as a male. She posted lots of stories about "his" family life, his fake wife and children. Apparently it worked since lots of people love "him" and had become "his" followers ever since. The woman behind the fake account said that she was happy with it, she thought that she gained pleasure from it. This part is completely irrational, at least for me. Now I know one of the reasons why people are using fake account.

Oh wow. She takes pleasure in deceiving people. Making an alias is ok for me. That's acceptable coz some people just want to keep their privacy and protect their personal life. But to pretend to be somebody else and makeup facts about you that isn't you, is very deceitful for me.

@Irsan29 I find it creepy. I don't want to be associated with those kind of people.

@toniganzon Well for my case that's kinda hard. Since I founded this writing community where authors can put their aliases. Thank God it's not happening in real life

Those are not really "fake" accounts, they are aliases, and that's not illegal. A fake account is when someone creates an account pretending to be some other real person, for example there are some accounts on Facebook claiming to be Andre Rieu, when they are not. They say things like if you want to meet me please reply to this post. Well don't, because you won't! Facebook tells you to report these kinds of accounts.

That's interesting... Of course, if I learned that about someone I talk with, it will make me wonder... how much of what she says will I believe now... I suppose, as long as she is not hurting anyone, it would be fine. I mean, it's like creating a story, like in a novel or movie or tv show... However, if she is not being open about it being fictional, then wouldn't it be lying to anyone who thinks it's real? If anyone finds out, they will probably feel they've been made fools of... If she does it to make herself feel good somehow... isn't she just deluding, not only others, but herself as well? I don't know. Maybe there's more to this story... I don't know...

Hello and welcome to myLot. People who are unsure and usually do not like themselves fake their identity.

@Irsan29 This is just my opinion, but those insecure prefer to hide behind a fake identity.

Hi Anna, thanks for the greetings. Yeah, I guess I'd agree with that. Insecurity is probably the biggest reason

Another reason could be that they don't want to make their profile available to the public. I had two profiles at FB. One for family and friends and a second one to post on public pages and in debate groups. Just locking down a profile won't stop people from accessing information on your profile. I used the fake profile whenever I posted in groups or on media pages.

You're right, lots of people did that. They like separating personal life and alias for other purposes

@Irsan29 I didn't do it to decieve people or trick them. I just wanted a wall of protection from the nuts on FB.

The thing that makes it creepy to me is when they steal someone else's identity and photos. Now if they have taken the photo from an AI that generated it and have created a person with a life then who cares? If they aren't scamming people out of money there is no issue here.

The woman I talked to, she didn't steal anyone's money but yes she gained happiness from the fake world she created. As for the fake picture, I don't know where she got it

Just how are you being deceived here besides the "GENDER" issue? Did you suffer any financial loss? Did you suffer any mental or physical abuse? Like in some countries they make mobile phones that can 4 SIM Cards and in many countries I would say globally people are using DUAL FB, Whatsapp and etc., accounts. Some people just have their own private preference, that's all.

No, I didn't say anything about financial loss, I just said, It's irrational, at least for me.

You really have to be cautious - this example is more like someone being a fantasy writer - someone like an author with a 'nom de plume' they may not view it as deceitful, but more like an author writing fiction - no way of knowing if they have bad intentions - but it illustrates how cautious we need to be.
