i don't think it's curable but can be controlled. prevention is the best way to stay away from it, but, of course, very difficult to do that. my mom is diabetic and what she does is a regular check up with an Endocrinologist and a Nephrologist. Thanks to them my mom's sugar level is controlled already and her kidneys are protected.
she takes her medications as directed by these physicians. at the same time, she also takes a food supplement called Diabetrol. it is effective in her case. she also used to take PSP ( it is now called PXP. ) it is a food supplement made from specific grains of brown rice and a few amounts of spirulina. it is also effective but had to stop taking it because it is quite expensive. there were other food supplements she took but these two responded to her positively.
recently, my mom and i have been eating this vegetable called OKRA (i don't know its English translation.). it aides in controlling blood sugar levels. it also helps regulate blood pressure. and it relieves constipation. usually, diabetics are constipated. my mom takes Senokot for constipation and she noticed a much improvement in her bowel movement since taking OKRA. though i am not diabetic (not yet), i also noticed an improvement in my bowel movement. just light steam it and eat it as is. don't add anything like fish sauce, soy sauce or vinegar.
i suggest that early control of diabetes should be done to prevent complications. it was already late when we were able to control my mom's diabetis. only after complications were present already. first, her heart was affected. she had to undergo multiple bypass operation (5 veins). and then later her eyes had to be lasered twice or thrice ( i forgot how many times already ) to prevent blindiness. the opthalmologist said the veins in her eyes were already bleeding and if not lasered, she would go blind.
now, it's neuropathy that is making her life hard. luckily, she doesn't have yet that painful tingling sensation in her feet, but heaviness in her chest and feet is what she feels. and at this point, we are trying so hard to prevent complication to manifest in her kidneys (that's why we don't fail to visit our Nephrologist.)
also, if you cannot drink milk or coffee without sweetness, i suggest that you use honey instead of artificial sweeteners. if you can avail of pure honey, that'll be very favorable. but just one teaspoon is all you have to take each day. my mom uses it for her coffee (mild coffee only - very small amounts of coffee, the rest is skim milk).
also, if you eat bread, use wheat bread. if you can get diet wheat bread, that's better because it doesn't have sugar; if present, i think around 2-3% only. wheat bread is high in fibre which is much healthier.
i hope this helps.
