"Mamma Mia" was released in 1975. Mamma Mia refers to an Italian phrase that is used to express surprise or anguish.
ABBA never intended to release "Mamma Mia" as a single. They offered it to the Brotherhood of Man; and they turned it down. However, it was released as a single in Australia and remained at #1 for 10 weeks. Epic Records in the UK took notice and began to heavily promote ABBA's singles. It hit #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
"Mamma Mia" never did as well in the US though. It hit #12 on the US Adult Contemporary (Billboard) chart, #32 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #36 on the US Cashbox Top 100.
"Mamma Mia", the stage play, premiered in London in 1999. The film appeared in 2008 in the US; and the sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", premiered in 2018.

I liked the first movie but did not dare watch the second. I thought it couldn´t be as good as the first. The song is beautiful as many of Abba´s songs.

@NJChicaa That was the kind of movie that should not have a sequel.

I enjoyed the second one. Cher was in it.

I like this song. I even like the movie based on it as cheesy as it was. It actually inspired me to want to visit the Greek islands. I'm not someone who wants to see all of the world. I'm happy with my beloved Cozumel. A Greek island cruise has been a dream of mine for a long time though.

@LindaOHio They are fun to watch and it is interesting to see how they built the story around ABBA's music. Some of the singing, especially by Pierce Brosnan, is cringe-worthy, but Meryl Streep does a good job with her songs.

This was #5 on my list. So obviously I don’t care for it.

@LindaOHio I noticed many times Mamma not written correctly, as many other Italian words by the way (pizzas, spaghettis, paninis - ALL wrong).

Personally I like the actress - Meryl Streep in that movie and I did enjoy watching the movie and the songs by Abba. Along with the song in the title, I like the group's other hits like Dancing Queen, Money Money Money, Chiqutita, Knowing Me Knowing You and etc..
I feel there should be more musical movies like this one.
