Went to a local Moroccan restaurant

Went out to a Moroccan/Mediterranean restaurant Saturday night. It's close to our house and is the only Moroccan restaurant in Staten Island, where I live. This is our second time going there. The place is cozy and their food is delicious. The owners are super nice and very friendly. Service may be a tad slow but that's because it's just the owners and one chef. They definitely need to hire a waitress as one of the owners is also a chef there. Last time they gave us two lemonades on the house, which they make themselves. They add mint leaves to it. I don't like mint but the lemonade is refreshing and really good. They sell it for $7 each, so that saved us $14. This time they gave us falafel on the house. And they gave me lemonade on the house as well. Weird thing is, they added the lemonade to the bill. It said it was $4 instead of $7. And then right under it it said 100% discount, -$4. Why didn't they just leave the lemonade of the bill? Two things that I wanted to order they did not have. Will have to come back again to try them.

They added on the bill and wrote 100% discount to be sure that you knew that they made you a gift. It is not a joke.

@lovebuglena May be they forgot about the falafel. The Moroccan waiters are always very slow to serve people.

@LadyDuck in this case, the owner is the waiter and chef of Moroccan food.

I didn't really study the bill but I don't remember seeing the same thing done to the falafel, which they gave us on the house as well.

I'm sure it had something to do with in-house bookkeeping... but people are weird!

I wonder if they added falafel to the bill as well and then did the same thing. I didn't really look at the receipt. Hubby was the one looking it over.

What did you actually have for a main course? As far as I remember I have never had any Moroccan food. That is funny -$4 I guess they were just trying to make sure you knew.

We had meat balls in tomato sauce with onions, spices, fresh herbs, and a sunny egg. We shared that. But it was really meant for one person.

They probably added the lemonade to the bill for bookkeeping or inventory purposes, so that they can account for how much free product they are giving away. My buddy owns a bar, and they allot a certain percentage of each days sales to be used for free drinks, which they budget as "promotional offers." That helps them keep track of inventory and how much stuff they are giving away. I love Moroccan food. I'm not aware of any restaurants like that around where I live, but at Epcot at Disney World one of the countries in the World Showcase is Morocco. They have two restaurants there and I always love making reservations to eat there. The food is amazing.

@lovebuglena I'm sure it's that way everywhere. If there's not a lot in NYC, there certainly wouldn't be a lot elsewhere either!

There aren't many Moroccan restaurants in NYC from what the owners have told us.

That sounds weird but I think they have a reason for jotting it down the bill..

I don't remember them doing that the first time we were there.

Thank you. I'd definitely go back there a third time. Some stuff I wanted to try they did not have yesterday.

@lovebuglena We've never tried Moroccan food. If we lived closer to Cleveland, they probably have more ethnic food there.

Maybe it helps for tax purposes if they bill you then discount it. Who would know? But I guess they have their reasons.

I think the first time we went and they gave us lemonade on the house they did not do that.
