He must be having a tough time

My ex and I are generally on very good terms but our current relationship ebbs and flows as sometimes he is in a good mood and other times he definitely is not. He has been in some personal crisis mode for the past couple of years but refuses to see a counselor or consider medication.
He reached out to me yesterday with a pleasant message wishing me a happy Monday and a good day. We went back and forth a bit with friendly and sometimes inappropriate messages that I can't share. Today I sent him a similar text and he thanked me for the thought but said he was having an awful day and to not be mad if he doesn't respond to me later as he plans to turn off his phone as soon as his work day is finished. He normally doesn't put out that kind of disclaimer. He seems to be making an effort to be more kind than usual. I can only assume that he is struggling and wants me to be there for him. Of course I always am and always will be.
I told him that I hoped he would be able to relax and rest this evening when he gets home. I hope he can. He works so hard and is dealing with his own personal stuff as well.

It's a shame he won't go for counseling. If he did, I think there's a chance you could reconcile.

I know how that can be for some people. I wish him the best of luck, I really do.

I hope he can get it all together, I know how hard it can be especially when you are on your own. Glad you two can be friends.
