My husband's watch is smarter than either of us

After Vince was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, his doctor advised him to get a ‘smart watch’. Maybe it’s called an iWatch? Anyway, it links to his phone and is much smarter than either of us and incredibly entertaining.
It tracks his pulse rate and keeps a history which the doctor can then watch. It reminds him to take a particular pill at 6am and 6pm which pleases me no end as it saves me having to remember. He tells him it’s time he stood up for a few minutes; it wants him to take a ‘mindfulness’ moment; at about 9.45pm, it plays a few notes of very well-known lullaby which gives him another excuse to swear at it.
He has even discovered he can answer the phone on it. This always reminds him of Dick Tracy, a cartoon detective from his childhood days. Dick Tracy could talk into his watch too. Is anyone here old enough to remember Dick Tracy?
But when we went to the concert last Sunday, Vince tripped slightly going up some stairs and fell on his hands and knees. He wasn’t hurt at all but his watch said ‘It looks like you’ve had a fall. Are you okay? Do you want to call 000 for help?’ Honestly, how smart is this thing? Pretty soon, he won’t need a wife, just his clever watch.

I've heard Pretty start cussing and then yelling at her smart watch! I don't bother asking what happened. I don't want her angry at me! I like my watch. I look at it and the hands on it point to numbers so I know what time it is. And that's all it can do.

I'm sorry he fell, but your post is hilarious. This technology has already surpassed us in abilities. Kind of nice, but kind of scary.

Glad he is ok. Watches have even saved lives by calling for help now.

Oh, wow, I guess it is pretty much smart to know every detail of his move and was even monitored when he fell. I wish I have that kind of watch for my father since he too needs constant monitoring because he has a heart condition. It pretty much makes you aware of your condition and suggests some activities to do to feel better.

@JudyEv I used to have a similat gadget attached to my wrist when my BP rose. They monitored me for 24 hours and returned the gadget back to ht clinic afterwards. It took 24 hours of my BP and heart rate. Though it was kind of painful since there is a metal ball the bulged under my pulse and I cannot removed them even if it hurts else the reading will be distorted.

First of, that is a lovely photo. Thanks for sharing it.
Second, it is pretty amazing what technology can do for us nowadays. I'm sure Vince will find out more about the benefits of his smart watch.

@JudyEv I had a similar watch before that counted my steps, monitored my sleep, and told me to get moving because I was being idle for too long. I smarted up and ditched the watch. LOL!!!

@allen0187 That sounds like Vince's watch. Maybe he'll end up doing the same!

This one does a lot of things we didn't really know about. It has turned out a really good investment.

The endurance riders have incredibly clever 'watches' too that record distances, speed, etc - much like yours I guess. Vince's was getting up his nose because he wasn't hitting some 'exercise goals' so he set for 5 minutes a day. Problem solved!!

Not that it has anything to do with the rest of your post, but when your husband fell and the watch asked if he was okay it made me think of an on-air moment with conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh once. He had THAT watch and slammed his fist down on the table in a heated moment of passionate commentary and the watch thought he had fallen, to which out of nowhere Rush yelled, "No, you idiot, I have not fallen!" Of course he had to explain why he said that. But it was a pretty funny moment.

I was gifted an Apple watch recently. It knows way too much. I am trying to get used to it, but....I honestly would have rather have had just an old fashioned watch.
I guess I'm old. I didn't think I was. I love my IPad and my IPhone and my laptop. But oh, this watch....it's just too smart.

I have tripped on 3 occasions and fallen. It was only on the third fall that I got the message that I had fallen and should they call 911. When I questioned that it was suggested that it was because the first fall was butt down the stairs, the second I fell onto my butt but the third one I practically face planted in my hallway. A munch harder (and painful) fall. The fall outside where I slipped on ice and landed on my butt could have been dangerous if I had continued to fall backwards and bump my head on the ground. Perhaps if that HAD happened I would have gotten the alert.
It got quite a laugh from my kids when I got the alert on my phone with the third fall. As long as I was not unconscious I guess they felt free to laugh their fool heads off.

@JudyEv The first time I fell down the stairs my husband was mad at me because I scared him, as in startled. He doesn't like being scared. He growled at me to watch where I was going. Because I told this story to the rest of the family, they were concerned when I took the hard fall (my husband was in bed). My daughter's fiance came running, the girls asked if I was okay. But once I told them what the watch was saying the girls laughed their fool heads off. I had to laugh too. I would think with my mobility issues, chronic pain and being of a certain age I think they would care a bit more.

You're right of course but I think it's just as well it can't or I might be the one that becomes obsolete.

That’s a very smart watch. Much smarter than the watch I wear. Oh, wait…I don’t wear a watch!
But don’t worry Judy, Vince’s watch will never replace you!

That’s nice that it works well for Vince but that would drive me batty. I have a fib too and take my medication and try to ignore it. I do meditate morning and evenings. I’ve also learned to take long slow breaths when the afib acts up.

Why do you say so, you both have an emotional tie within yourself. He will always need your mental support.

Sorry about Vince's falling. Thankfully it was nothing serious.
Your post made me smile. These smart devices are replacing so many things in our lives. I just hope it doesn't replace our common sense or spontaneity. Imagine it saying..." Hey, that was a joke and you need to laugh". I don't know where this might end. Anyway it's stll not that far

I worry about some regime in some country or other being able to manipulate its citizens (more than they do now) through these devices - or even being able to store information. They already pick up what you're saying even when they are supposedly turned off.

@JudyEv Yes. Data security and privacy is big concern. We never know if we are using these devices or we are being used by them.
