Don’t ever dump that down the drain!

Yesterday I noticed in the cupboard a box of malt o’ meal that had been used for a recipe well over a year ago. Probably way longer then that it was opened so I decided to get rid of it. It was almost a full box and I figured it would make the garbage heavy for the garbage man so I thought dumping it down the sink and flushing it down with water would be a good idea. It was probably one of the worst ideas I’ve had in awhile. It plugged the sink so bad. I was able to take a lot out which turned to a play dough like substance but I couldn’t get it out of the drain. I had to use the toilet plunger and it has a small hole in it from a mouse so it didn’t work well. Two hours of plunging and bailing water out with a cup to get the grains out and it still was plugged. Ran down to the dollar general today to look for two sink plungers but they didn’t have any so I had to buy two toilet plungers. My husband went out and plunged the sink with them and minutes later it was unplugged. He is my hero today. I think I’ll call him that all day just for giggles.

@shaggin He could have tried to help immediately. Some things are so sticky, they make a mess.

@snowy22315 you’d think I’d have learned my lesson a year ago or so when I did this with flour. That wasn’t that bad of a problem. I’ve learned my lesson now though

Thankfully I've never bought that stuff and haven't tried to dump it into any drain.

@rebelann I believe what I bought it for was scalloped corn. I’m sure it’s expired and being open so long needed to be tossed long ago. If I buy it again and don’t use it all I won’t wash it down the sink this time .

I have a small septic so I don't dare put anything other than liquid down the drains and I'm careful about that too.

I would never throw something like that down the drain, even with a garbage disposal. It would all go into our septic tank. Glad it's gone now!

@DianneN I know people with septics have to watch what they put down. We have town sewer so I don’t worry much… obviously I didn’t worry enough

Oh no, I hope you didn't cause problems. I rarely even use my garbage disposal.

@CarolDm this is the first time in my 19 years of living here that I have ever had a clogged kitchen sink. I think I’m getting stupider as I get older.

@RebeccasFarm last night the baby wouldn’t let me put her down for a few hours and dollar general closed so I had to wait to get the plungers this morning.

Such a small error of judgement can impact your life for some hours! Good for your hero husband getting it unplugged.

@Judyev yes it wasted time when I could have gotten so much more done and offset the baby’s bedtime routine.

If in the house, then yes the hero would be my dad. But if I'm alone in the student dorm, then I usually use baking soda, vinegar and hot water to unclog the sink. But nowadays they have this unclog formula or something, I usually buy that and pour hot water and wait half and hour before using the sink again.

@Adie04 I usually use draino when sinks get really smelly as I know theirs a little clog somewhere. My husband said draino wouldn’t work on this though because draino dissolves hair not malt o meal .

@shaggin Aha, yup. When sink clogged, they will get smelly. That's what I found out when trying to unclog those.
