Today in the UK a report on improving the transport system is being published. The UK is the fourth largest economy in the world, yet the public transport system is a disgrace, which means more people use the car and this leads to greater congestion. On BBC website I remember people saying Indian trains were the greatest public service in the world? Is this true, what makes them so good and what can the UK learn from India?

Indian railways is the second largest employer in the world, second only to the mighty Chinese army. The railway service in India is fairly good. I had a different opinion until I came to US recently.I used to think that only the Indian trains run late. Having been in US for about 7 months now, that notion of mine is changed. The Indian railways is also probably the largest railway network under single management.
The suburban service in Mumbai and couple other metro cities is particularly fascinating. In Mumbai, during peak hours, there is a train halting at any given station every 3 minutes.

Indian railways has good and bad aspects. Good thing is that any one can conveniently travel from one place to another without using buses and flights which are so congested (no movement possible). Indian railways employs more people in the world then any other avenue anywhere. So, its a great service yes. However, in big cities they need innovative methods to deal with the amount of people travellign in local trains with people hanging by the door. It can be risky. But yes I will agree that in palces like UK and US absence of proper public transportation sucks.
