Inflation Hitting Hard

As you know, I watch prices like a hawk, and today's trip to the supermarkets showed some interesting price jumps.
Eggs at Aldi were 99 cents per dozen, then $1.19, then $1.29 and are now $1.59. They were $1.69 at Walmart. I tried to buy canned mushrooms at Aldi but they did not have any (they have been out for months). Sour cream jumped from 99 cents at Aldi to $1.59. At Walmart boneless, skinless chicken thighs jumped from $1.99 per pound to $2.14 per pound. Today they were $3.24 per pound. I left them in the store. Whole chicken jumped from 97 cents per pound to $1.32 per pound.
I could not get Aldi's lunch meat (and have not been able to get it for months). Walmart's 2 lb Great Value lunch meat was not there. I wound up buying Land-O-Frost which used to be $3.89 per pound. It is now $4.92.
Kielbasa at Aldi jumped from $2.89 to $3.24. I left it on the shelf.
I wanted to get some bratwurst but no one had any including Walmart. Completely wiped out.
Traditional ham prices for the Easter holiday runs about 89 cents per pound to $1.19 per pound. I could not find a ham under $1.59 per pound.
Gas was $4.35 per gallon today which is slightly down but still high.
Yellow onions at Aldi jumped from $1.69 for 3 lb bag to $2.29.
All estimations are showing that the average household is spending $300 more per month than even a couple of months ago for everything. So, it is something to keep in mind. Just to keep up, one needs to MAKE $300 more a month just to break even.
There is no sign of anything getting better. The wholesale price index rose 11.2% in March. At this pace inflation is expected to rise by 15%-22% by the end of the year.

Not only is the price going up but products are fast disappearing from the shelves.

And, I imagine people's paychecks won't go up. If they do, it won't be enough to compeinsate.

It's a tough call on raising wages, because all raising wages would do is further add to the inflation problem. In fact, raising wages is one piece of the current inflation issue since so many companies are having to pay so much just to get people to work for them.

The sad thing is they really have no explanation for it. Please lets not make this one political because its important to all of us. That being said I heard covid, I heard people not wanting to do that work anymore. .
I heard chickens caught the flu so why prices went up there. I heard mostly it was a make up for all the profit they lost during the pandemic.
All I hear is greed. Wish these fools would stop being so greedy and to me if anything pandemic showed we needed to change some things not double down on a system that was exposed by a tiny organisms or at least pretend they want to be organisms.

Except Biden reversing Trump's energy policies was directly responsible for high fuel costs and a 40 year high inflation rate.
I can see why you don't want to make it political. Biden's policy on energy is hurting Americans across the board.

@Vikingswest1 That's coming either way and has nothing to do with Biden. Of course Trump may be better here in short term I will destroy you if I do not do what I say. Does not ever work in long run though and thanks for keeping a that short and brief, as far as political.

Except that Biden is directly responsible for the high fuel costs and the accompanying higher product costs.
The inflation is the result of the reversal of Trump's energy policy. We don't control the price of oil now. We are an importer, not an exporter.

Everything keeps going up and the bad thing is the fact that the prices never go down once they go up
@jstory07 After Reagan fixed the economy and addressed inflation back in 1982 prices did go down, and way down. It can happen again. You just have to have the right policy to get it done.

@crossbones27 It is not the businesses dictating the cost of their products. It is the cost of making them and transporting them that is dictating it. All one needs to do is look at a corporate balance sheet and what you find is that their margins are DECREASING, not INCREASING. That is important to note. In other words, they are being forced to charge more but can't pass on ALL new costs, and so they are actually losing money.
The stock market will be the next thing to take a dump. Mark my words. I am a long-time investor, and I have spent the past year and a half divesting for this very reason.
Higher wages and supply chain issues and the rising cost of raw materials is going to have a major negative impact on businesses' bottom lines and valuations will fall.

The eggs that I usually get at my local Russian store (regular jumbo brown eggs) were $3.99. I didn't even know how much they were until I bought them. No price tag there for these eggs. And these were the cheapest eggs it seemed. I bought them previously for $2.59. Supermarket prices seem even higher than $3.99. What the heck is going on? Prices are going up for everything but as far as I know salaries are not going up. How are people supposed to afford everything?

At some point salaries can only go up so far before they all just wind up being passed along again in the form of even higher prices, which means any wage increases become erased by more inflation. Once inflation hits it is very difficult to get out of, and the unfortunate reality is that the Biden administration is not implementing any of the policies that could help to actually curb it.

@lovebuglena I am not necessarily convinced they don't give a damn about it as much as they simply are following failed policies that never work, and never have worked. Democrats tend to have good intentions in some things. The problem is they just don't think things through and everyone gets screwed as a result.

It is bad enough the shelves are pretty much empty, the stuff you CAN find is way, way up in price. We are in a deep mess and unfortunately the current administration has no clue what to do. Partly because they were a large part of causing the mess.
It is what it is. We have no choice but to pay the price.

This is tough. Should we only eat fruits all day to save costs?

@yoalldudes That is almost where all of it comes from. Unfortunately. Which, of course, also adds to more inflation. The one thing about inflation which has always been true is that you cannot spend your way out of it.
This is a concept the democrats unfortunately do not understand.

@porwest I also heard that UBI on certain states will be given. Will this be sourced from money printing as well?

I find it sad that people are spending more and getting less. I also have had some trouble finding things that I normally buy. Thankfully Mike has been able to order from walmart.com and some of those items (nonperishable) were able to be shipped to us. It is going to get worse.
