Walmart Canada Switches To Re-Useable Shopping Bags, And I Have Mixed Feelings.

So Wal Mart Canada announced that it was switching exclusively to re-useable shopping bags. The ones they have are made out of some kind of cloth. They are not overly expensive, and they do come in handy, but I still have mixed feelings.
For one thing, I live in an apartment tower, so those single use bags always got used in the garbage chute Not the most elegant solution, but they got used. Now that Wal Mart is using re-useable shopping bags, what am I going to use in the garbage chute? I have no plans to purchase more single-use plastic bags because other single use plastic bags have been discontinued. OK, I'd be just fine with them eliminating plastic altogether, and coming up with a biodegradable single-use bag, so that we could eliminate buing small trash bags. Paper is not quite strong enough for organic waste, but perhaps someone will think of something.
My second big problem with single use shopping bags is that I do not go to the store, I get my groceries delivered. This creates a bigger bag fee, and it also means that sooner or later I'm going to have an apartment full of Wal Mart bags that I don't need. For folks who are able to get to the store themselves, the re-useable bag thing is a great idea. There is no reason why they can't wash a few and keep them in the trunk of the car, or something. For those of us who take the bus or get groceries delivered, this is not an ideal solution.
How does everyone else feel about this switch in any store, to re-useable bags? What do you like, and what do you dislike about it?

I live in Virginia in the USA and for years most stores have the cloth or heavy duty plastic reusable bags that you could use by choice. Recently some counties here in Virginia have started charging to no more plastic bags (except the reusable ones. They charge five cents that goes to county taxes. I used those small ones for diapers, pull ups and small trash cans.

Yeah.I never minded paying 5 cents for a bag. Where else can you get 20 small trash bags for a buck?

@danishcanadian I get from Walmart a pack of 40 four gallon bags that are lavender scented for $2.24. Which comes out to 5.6 cents each which is good because they are larger, sturdier and smell good too.

I usually take reusable bags with me when I go shopping, and use the plastic ones for garbage. I still have a backlog from the time I moved here, so I won't run out too soon yet. As for organic waste, I compost.

We’d love to compost but it’s hard in an apt. I wish we still had a backlog. Those who have them are definitely fortunate.

I don't really have a problem with it. When my husband and I go shopping we often use our own reusable bags for our groceries. The little we have to use one use plastic, we still put them in the reusable bags to bring them home. And then we use them a trash bags.

You sound like you line in a situation where that works perfectly. That’s why there is merit to both ideas. Thanks for stopping by.

@danishcanadian Not a problem. I also shop at stores that never had plastic bags. They don't offer bags at all. At least not for free. You have to bring your own, or buy theirs. Which we've done both.

Its time to do away with the plastic bags, they are not helping our earth any at all.
I believe that they still have a form of plastic bags in the produce section that you could use. They are biodegradeable so much better for the environment.
But it sounds like you will be buying your garbage bag liners like everyone else does.

The garbage liners are made of the same stuff as the grocery bags they’re taking away, and that’s why I’m mad.
I love the idea of biodegradable plastic. I would LOVE to see biodegradable single-use items for times when dingle-use items are essential.

I wish that were an option. Keep of you want to keep, return the ones you don’t need. I get all my stuff delivered, so before long I’ll have too many bags.
