Digging Up Bones

Are you familiar with this phrase, Digging Up Bones? It has different meanings to different people I am sure. Today, I have been going through some of my Dad's things in the attic. Digging through my past. As a result of this process, which is not even close to being finished, I had to stop and order pizza for dinner. Time got away from me as I went through many old memories. Lots of laughs and tears along the way. When my Dad passed in 2017, I was the only sibling left. Everything was passed on to me. And there are many boxes I have to go through. I am taking them one by one. Today I opened one filled with photos. Wow was that a journey. Some photos I was aware of, others I was not. Family, friends and others. Many Army photos of my Dad in his younger years. Some photos of Dustin I had not seen in years. And lots more. I will share more another day. How exhausting is this to do. I need a break. Time for dinner and Domino's pizza was the most convenient and very good with extra olives and cheese. I always enjoy their pizza. Photo is mine. *Update: I thought of this Randy travis country song called Digging Up Bones when I wrote this yesterday and forgot to add a link to the song. Yes it is an actual country song and a big hit in its day.

You deserve a break from cooking supper after a day like that. There is hardly a word for the task that you did today. I hope that you rest easily tonight knowing that you did your best all day long at that job.

@CarolDM Mental, emotional and usually physical fatigue. They all play into each other. I do hope that you sleep with your guardian angel looking down on you saying......sleep Mama, sleep.

It can be very exhausting going through mementos such as you're doing. I've been going through my mother's diaries but you can only do so much at a time.

Good song choice for your post Carol. I can relate to going through all your dads things and it being bittersweet especially the pictures. I had a similar experience on Saturday. My oldest daughter and hubby will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in the next few days, I don't know how we came about looking at pictures from her bridal shower but as much fun as it was to relive that fun day many of the people who attended have passed away. We laughed and cried as we looked at the pictures.

@CarolDM I think you're wise to go through it all little by little. I do totally understand how you feel, I'm sure seeing pictures of Dustin was like a punch in the gut (and heart)

@CarolDM Figures that I haven't heard the song -- except for a few artists, I'm not a country fan.

@LindaOhio That is an old saying for me. Funny, even a country song was written about it. A good and not so good journey through the boxes. I will do more later.

Your pizza sounds really good, I am into the interesting books by Kathy Reichs about an anthropologist who figures out crime by looking at bones, The books created the TV series Bones. I never knew there was such a song. Going through my head is dem bones dem bones,

Digging up bones in India means finding out something that happened in the past or trying to find out something that's not traceable. Anyway I too love pizza but Domino's don't deliver to my area.

I can imagine the sadness of relinquishing happy memories with the ones we love so much. When I look at my husband's screen saver filled with our children's pictures when they were little, it always brings me to tears. Because they're all grown now and are on their own with their own families or boarding with friends.

@everwonderwhy So kind of you to ask. I had to sort of decompress I guess. Taking my time is the only way it can work. After he passed, I boxed up everything and brought it (500 miles) to my attic. That was in 2017. I thought it was time to at least start. Thank you, he would have had a story to tell with each photo. That is one of the things I miss. I am thankful for the memories. You are such an angel and so appreciated.

Just thinking about it makes me exhausted too. I can't seem to do it alone. To open up old boxes and go through old stuff and organizing them. I'm too lazy to do that.
