What do you think of Tribute bands and are they popular where you are?
I like a good tribute band with the right circumstances. Tributes are often times trying to both look and sound as close to the original band that they are covering. It seems like more often than not around here they are playing theaters or outdoors events. Not so much bar bands.
I've been fortune enough to see Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Roy Orbison in their tribute forms of course :-)

Of course nothing beats the real thing, but I've seen quite a few tribute bands in my time. It's a fun way to listen and see live music when you can't get the real thing. Especially from bands that aren't together anymore or have had members pass on.

@FayeHazel I’m going to see a show in a few weeks with Bad Company and Foreigner tribute bands.

I tend to agree. Tributes are a fun way to see something close to the band you like when perhaps the original group isn't together any more.

I have not heard a tribute band in a long time, I have heard some really good ones and one time I saw an Elvis impersonator that made it seem that Elvis had come back to life, That kind of shook me though,

They are very popular at casinos here. I saw a Beatles Tribute Band in Vegas once and they were very good.

@FayeHazel Nice! At least a good alternative for when the original isn't available or accessible lol
-------------Very true. A lot of these bands, especially The Beatles, don't give many concerts anymore.

Ha ha - ah yes, Cher - a popular figure for the drag queen community. Drag is quite fascinating in itself :-) Where is "around here" ?

I agree with the songwriters Ashford & Simpson. "Ain't nothing like the real thing, Baby. Ain't nothing like the real thing." But I also appreciate the popularity of tribute bands because "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." And, @much2say does have a good point about the creativity behind tribute band names.
But I still prefer the real thing. And, if you listen closely to your favorite bands, you can often hear who they are playing tribute to anyway. That's because musicians who influenced them can also be heard in their music. So, in a sense, every band is a tribute band when you stop to think about it.
And, for those of you who may not have ever heard "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," here is the version by the late Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

True, even the best tributes aren't the same.... though a nice substitute for cases when the real thing cannot be had. A most interesting point. Almost everyone has been inspired by someone else and if you listen close enough you can probably pick up on it...
