To continue on:
I always walked to school. I remember one winter walking in snow up over my knees. A police car pulled up; and the policeman told me that there wasn't any school. He was kind enough to take me back home. I also remember walking by the Edsel Dealership each day; and there was a bakery on the way which I stopped in from time to time on the way home.
I skipped 2nd grade; so I now am in 3rd grade. I remember having to learn the times tables and reading longer and more complex words. I think we were doing math at this time too. I have no idea what I missed out on by skipping 2nd grade. During the winter, when we were waiting in the school yard for school to start, we would slide our metal lunch boxes on the ice. I'm surprised any of us had a thermos that wasn't broken. 1st through 3rd grade was held in a portable building because there was no room in the regular school.
Some time after 3rd grade it was suggested that I skip another grade. My mother declined; and I'm glad she did. For 4th grade I was now in the regular school building. About this time they were beginning to build onto the school to accommodate the lower grades. We were allowed to watch the construction for a few minutes each day. I remember also having Civil Defense drills. We would get under our desks and put our arms over our heads. This was the period of the "cold war".
At some point I was accepted into the choir; and we practiced during the day. I always felt that time spent practicing and going to Mass could have been better spent learning!

We only had tornado and fire drills. Sometimes school was canceled for a bomb threat. If we were at school when it came in that was handled like a fire drill.

@wolfgirl569 I wonder how it would protect the kids if it was a real tornado.

@LindaOHio There was a government scheme going at one time and we all got 1/3 pint of milk at morning recess. This was free. I don't remember it ever going sour but it often sat in the sun for a while before it was handed out.

I always had milk in my thermos. You're right about the emotional maturity.

@JudyEv We got milk at recess too. I don't know if we paid for it. Sometimes the milk was sour.

Quite significant memories. The policeman was kind enough and gracious to drop you back home.
We don't get to have such cops everywhere.
Skipping grades is not a normal practice but may be there would have been a valid reason.
Thanks for sharing.
I had also stated sharing about memories but due to some sudden happenings over the last two weeks, I have not been able to get in the mindset for more such posts.
Have a nice Sunday ahead.

@marlina I wish I would have gotten a book of cars from the dealership and kept it.

You were a smart little girl, I remember hating to learn the multiplication table but I also was in the choir of a church near school for a short while,

I always love the notion that the flimsy little desk would have protected us from a nuclear bomb.
