Shaking My Head (at myself)

United States

Let me start by saying that I'm intimidated by technology. I'm not a whiz on the computer and hate change, My desktop computer has been wanting to upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 but I keep hesitating because I'm leery of what the new Windows might be. My daughter had to use my desktop for something and it was just soooo slow that she was frustrated and said it's time to change to Windows 11. Of curse I didn't want to because of my fear of the unknown and if it would be a big change and I woudn't know how to use it. When I told her my fears she just laughed and said "mom you've been using Windows 11 on the laptop" So here I was fearful of something I didn't need to be. Yup I'm shaking my head at my own silliness Do you keep from doing something because you're fearful?

I have done this with many things in my life. And every single time, it turns out to be nothing. But that is how we roll sometimes. Worrying and being fearful of the unknown. Being an Apple user, I don't use Windows and I do not miss it. Good luck.

I really wish I was younger and got the hang of technology as easy as younger people do. I don' know anything about Apple but glad it works well for you.

@CarolDM you're lucky that you've been able to learn along the way. My daughter is like that and I rely on her for all of my internet/computer snafus

@Marilynda1225 My Dad worked around computers in his career, my brother followed in his steps and I learned as I went along.

Yes, I have been in the past. In the world of technology, I was so apprehensive about getting a now-defunct iPod (the music player). Oh, once I got one, however, WOW!!!!!!! I was so apprehensive of Windows 10, especially after the Windows 8 debacle, that I decided to not upgrade my PC. Instead, I bought a Mac.

@Marilynda1225 — most people shy away from them because it’s about three times more expensive up front. But you also don’t have to spend $300 on a word processing and spreadsheet suite (you get all of that for free with the Mac, while Microsoft charges for it). And holy cow, you can actually CALL APPLE and SPEAK WITH A TECHNICIAN!!!

I am not technical either and did the very same thing. I was using that newer version on my old laptop and when I got a new device in January, I wondered why everything seemed so much the same. You're not alone.

@Marilynda1225 I wanted to stay with Windows 7 because I was so used to it and then when had to upgrade to Windows 10 I got very frustrated. I am still frustrated because it is hard for me to understand things. I am fearful of the unknown. Do you feel comfortable with Windows 11 on your laptop?

I'm not seeing any difference between 10 and 11 but it does seem faster. I'm a creature of habit and as long as I can navigate my way through all the sites, etc that I use I'm happy.

@Marilynda1225 I understand what you are saying. I am the same way. I am glad 11 seems faster.

Absolutely. I don't want to change to 11 because I have over 100 computer games that are running just fine on 10.

I wouldn't change over either if I had that many games running. Whats your favorite game?

I hate to update Firefox because it rearranges things and when I get them where I want them again, it's time for another update! Can't win.

Updates can boggle my mind and I'm so glad that my daughter is good with technology. She's always my backup when something goes haywire

I'm the opposite and big things don't intimidate me as much as little things. Maybe i just don't have patience for figuring out little things

I feel the same way with technology but I have my siblings who I can ask for help if I encounter something difficult

That's good that you have your siblings handy if you need help. That's how I feel about my daughter (she's my go to when I need help)

I can relate. My desk top is so old, the last time I tried to install recommended updates, I thought I'd never get it to work again. So no more updates for me.

My desktop isn't that old so I guess it was easy enough to switch over to Windows 11.

There is very little difference between Windows 10 & 11, at least I can't see any with how we use our computers. I think we can all shake our heads at ourselves for letting fear hold us back.

I would not say fearful. But definitely averse to change. I always get used to things which makes me wonder why I hate it so much, and things are usually better. Still, it's the process of learning how to do things I already knew how to do that sometimes irritates me.

Basically I'm most resistant to change when it comes to technology. When I was younger I would have been excited about everything new that comes with technology and the internet. Now it intimidates me and I rely mostly on my daughter to take care of all the computer stuff. Once she shows me how to do something then I find it easier but I can't figure out most of it myself in the beginning.

I think the fear to change is in everybody. I am always scared by the "updated", but I do, and finally is nothing at all.

I have found a nagging worry is pushed to the background when another pressing issue stares at me from out of the blue! I too did not grow up with computers and worry when something goes wrong. Normally, the upgrades are more user-friendly.
