Question For Today- What is the Windiest State in the U.S.?

It's been pretty windy lately in my state of New Jersey (USA), so it got me to wondering if there was research done on that subject. I often thought of Florida as the windiest state in America due to all the hurricanes, but according to scientific testing done by Global Wind Atlas 3.0 I am wrong.
If you're talking average wind speed Florida actually ranks dead last, at #50 among the windiest states. So then, which states make the top ten list for most average wind speed. You may be surprised at some of the results!
The data center used metrics like means, sea level, windiest areas of the state, and power density. Let's just say they did a through testing over a span of the last 10 years. Anyway, that's how they arrived at their results.
Of course, there have been major wind events throughout the years. For me, I'll never forget Hurricane Sandy and the damage it caused New Jersey, my home state. And I was in college at Ohio State (Columbus, OH) when a devasting tornado swept through the city of Xenia, Ohio in the 70's.
Maybe you can remember a similar wind event either in your state or elsewhere you can share.
If you'd like to share you can respond with that event along with your prediction of windiest state. I'm sure it would be interesting to read along with your state choices. And maybe your guess will be one of those included in the windiest top ten states too. And perhaps, you might just live in one of those states, I'll let you know when I respond back to you.
P.S. - Wonder if they have a top ten for windiest countries too? That would also be an interesting survey.

Now that's funny! Good thing all those people don't pass wind at the same time, or it would feel like a nuclear bomb went off.

Well the winds here in Colorado would definitely knock you off your feet.
Lately they have been wild.
Boulder had a reading of 116 just this month.
Here where I live they get up to around 60 or so.

It can be very windy in Colorado and New Mexico so I will pick one of them, also anywhere West of the Mississippi can be very windy. Buffalo and Chicago get a lot of wind as well. I know that supposedly one town in Indiana is supposedly the windiest in the U.S.

@rebelann They say the barometric air pressure has a lot to do with the wind current. Funny how Oklahoma which is just above Texas made the list.

My first response would have been Chicago (Illinois)as it's always referred to as the windiest city. We have some powerful wind here in Pennsylvania at times but it probably isn't on your list.
Hurricane Sandy certainly did hit Jersey hard

@dgobucks226 Alaska taking the first spot surprises me but then again I don't know much about the wind there, I aways just think of snow.

@Marilynda1225 I imagine the flat terrain doesn't help. Also the air pressure there has a lot to do with it.

Never thought of the windiest states but I do know about windy cities. What is interesting is that Chicago the Windy City has a sister city in Latvia the port city of Liepaja which is also considered a windy city

Well, if you're looking at average wind temperatures, then yes Florida would be at the bottom. But, if you were to ask me when I was in the middle of a hurricane bearing down on us (I live in Florida), then I would say that we are the windiest! haha

@moffittjc And some with very flat lands too. No large structures of any kind to block the wind.

I thought it might be New Hampshire because they have such high wind gusts at the top of the mountain; but now I'm not so sure.
