Terrible heatwave in many parts of India

40 C plus, 42 C plus temperatures are common in many parts of Northern, Central and some of the Eastern parts of India during the summer time. Yet earlier after a few days or max of 10 days of such high temperatures, dust storms followed by light or heavy rains used to bring down the mercury. This time however due to a kind of Heat Island effect or domination of winds from Desert areas towards the Western part of India has made it extremely hot in a lot of areas. Some cities in North India even have temperatures between 46 and 47 C. In Delhi, it is between 42 and 45 C ! We have to use our ACs a lot but not all people have ACs and many have to work in harsh heat outside. The summer is getting harsher each year . Even Bangalore is pretty hot at this time. Better to take care and stay safe. Heat waves kill so many each year

@rhuenz Bangalore is well known for its pleasant weather throughout the year. But now we too are getting heat here, though not like Nagpur or North Indian states. But yes, it's pretty hot for Bangalore standards.

@arunima25 Plus schools are more focused on completing syllabus than thinking of kids' health. We hear of kids falling sick due to dehydration as well as stomach and other ailments. Very tough for kids especially those below 14/15 years of age.

@rhuenz Yes clothes dry very rapidly. I am also concerned about depletion of Groundwater resources as we have a huge population. We need good rains this year.

I heard of this from the lady who is my physio therapist. I spoke to her this past Thursday, when I was in for my appointment. She had been home on vacation in India and told me how very uncomfortable it was. She said she actually was glad to get back to Canada and our chilly spring!

@sulynsi Yes in fact, apart from one month of discomforting cold : mainly later December to late January, we prefer Winters and Autumns to the summer time. This time the condition is much tougher and no rains in immediate sight.

@sulynsi Not sure. If I were in a -40 C place for many days it would be tough for me. I enjoy many things of winters but for wearing too many layers at times plus when I sit in a position for a long time during extreme winters, my feet gets cold even with two socks. So I need room warmer or may be wear shoes, even if the mercury is between 10 and 15C. But yes, if there is room heating I would feel more comfortable then.

@marlina It feels like being in a Desert and even tougher for kids as most schools do not have Air conditioning.

@marlina Yet the reality in many schools. Some schools do have air conditioning but they charge a very high fees which not everybody - not even middle class folks can afford.

@marlina For the Government votes and the funds matter. Hardly any thought is given to the state of Education except for Recommendations here and a Policy change there.

Stop making those poor people work in such heat! You're a terrible person! Climate change seems to be hitting India hard. I hope things don't continue like that. Be careful.

@DaddyEvil I would advise Governments to declare a 4 hour Siesta (or break) as practiced in some Middle East nations. But hardly anyone listens! Yet many of the Labor force in India manage to brave heat and cold with great spirit and do a lot of manual work in construction and other infrastructure activities.

@DaddyEvil 3 AM would be very tough as we have workers and labors commuting from even as far as 70 to 100 Kms one side. Plus there is a cultural taboo in doing some works, especially cleaning during the dark. And above all, the Government or Private contractors and employees are not very employee friendly at times towards Labor force. The only plus is that strict rules towards minimum wages and a few other safety conditions are partial saviors of these labor who otherwise get a very raw deal unless their worker union gets too strong with political backing. But the Trade/worker Unionism is another topic altogether!

@DaddyEvil Expendable is actually a harsh term but sometimes a grim reality. Human life is not valued much in India.

@sjvg1976 There is a light breeze today. It was partially cloudy in the morning but sunny again. Only a big dust storm accompanied by rains can bring some good relief.

@LadyDuck Not a good sign of the days to come. We need to conserve our resources better and rethink development priorities. Too many vehicles, too much urbanization and roads are the big culprits apart from some natural weather phenomenon.

@LadyDuck Plus hardly any signs of any mindset change and such a state of prioritising Building Infrastructure and Buildings over Environment is a problem in many countries.

@LadyDuck Solar panels for producing electricity is gaining popularity here but not to the desired extent. In this respect, it is the Central, State and local governments who lag with a lack of innovative ideas.
