Do you feel compelled to tip even when the service is bad?

On Saturday when we were out at the festival the service was very slow, but they were mobbed with people so it was understandable. We did not unde rtip. However, when I went for the manicure, the ethestician was rude the entire time, and also did not give me a choice of spa services for my pedicure like I saw the other lady there being given. I should have complained about her, not given her a tip, but I didn't want them talking about me behind my back like what a cheapskate or something. I know some people who don't tip when the service is bad, are you one of them?

I'm a tipper and usually will tip even if the service isn't up to par. But I also overtip when the service is exceptional.

Nothing wrong with overtipping. I will overtip at certain places if I am in a good mood. My cousin who has been offered management jobs over and over and won't take them, works as a waitress when I think of her, I will overtip.

@snowy22315 servers do earn their money and that's the reason I overtip too.

@Marilynda1225 I honestly think the hardest job I ever had was as a waitress. I did that one summer when I was in college. I only lasted 6 weeks. I found it exhausting.

No. A tip is not a requirement. A tip is a reward for good service.

If it was really bad, I would probably be talking to the manager.

Some restaurants do that here, or offer a suggested tipping guideline.

@snowy22315 - Service is always added in Europe, never a tip is suggested, but if we go for dinner in a good restaurant we know that a tip from a minimum of 5% to a maximum of 10% of the bill is a good rule of thumb.

I always give a tip at salons, but never go back if the service isn't good.

Yeah, I may look for an alternative but out here in the hinterlands not a big choice. However, it is a rare event for me to get a mani pedi in the first place.

True, but these days it seems like everyone is expecting a tip and it gets a bit much, if you are getting a take out order or a coffee, I don't feel compelled to tip.

I know how you feel. I might under tip, but it would have to be really bad to not tip at all.
