Been in two accidents today...thanks to my parent

So this morning had to go to pay monthly salary to the watchman. Dad decided he wanted to drive. He has not yet recovered. But he felt confident that he could do so. And well, my neighbors could not dissuade him. He wouldn't let me drive. Hoping he would not drive fast, my neighbors accompanied us. And we had two episodes. Once while reversing, and the other while driving straight...he did not look in the left mirror. We survived. The car survived too. Though there are two dents to address. I decided to call the insurance company and service people. No...you are not calling. I will says my father. The man is so cool doing nothing about it. And here I am wondering how things will be going forward. All I can do is thank saibaba that my neighbors did not sustain any injuries. But the attitude of my parent is becoming a serious concern. Is there something that can be done like inform the police or something?

I'm glad everyone is okay this time. I'm very worried, though.

I don't think informing the police would be right. Understanding and support , with a lot of patience, is what your parents need.

It is not only for my parent's safety. Other innocents can be hurt too right? In any event, I informed the road transport authorities. Blasted them for renewing his license. That too for 5 years...crazy. He is 87.

Thank goodness no one was injured! My mother in law loved to drive, but these "little" accidents were happening way too often. The last one was backing out of our driveway and hitting my neighbor's parked car. In her case though, she would soon be moved to a senior home near my sister in law . . . she kept the car for a while but there was no need to drive - so she didn't. My sister in law eventually got rid of the car.

My dad is simply unwilling to move to senior home, even if I am going to be with him. I think getting rid of the car is a nice idea.

@vandana7 My MIL didn't want to move understandably, but financially she had to give up her house. I actually wish she had her freedom to drive herself anywhere, but it would be very unsafe for her. Getting rid of the car made it so she definitely could not drive.

@vandana7 Oh my goodness he is very dramatic! My friend whose elderly parents live with her and her family say that they act like teenagers . . . the children become the parents. If your dad causes too many accidents, he is a danger to himself and to others . . . something has to be done but I am not sure what.

When a senior parent does not want you to intervene, it causes a problem. He must realize that he can no longer drive. He probably does; but he doesn't want to admit it. My husband's driving is getting sketchy; but I would have to drive; and I'm not ready to take over that task since I hate to drive and I'm afraid to drive anymore. Can you drive?

I can. But yes, in the city definitely scary. We have two wheelers and three wheelers overtaking, and vehicles turning without giving any signals.

Thankfully all are okay except for the two dents that the car got. They get stubborn with age and it can be tough to handle them. Not sure but you need to have some way to stop it next time. One cannot get lucky again and again.

Exactly. I just wrote a message to Road Transport Agency Telangana ...to take away his license. Better still not to renew driving license after 80. Hope they will act on it. I am seriously worried. I cannot even hide the car key because it needs to be repaired first. This is a cause for concern.

@arunima25 Last year he renewed it for 5 years. Brainless people how can they renew an 80 plus guy's license for 5 years? Here, medical examination is a farce. I am feeling like Vibhishan.

@vandana7 When is his licence expiring? With the new rules, one has to clear driving test and medical examination each time they go for renewal. And if I am not wrong they are strictly not renewing it for old ages when they see any warning signs. You did the right thing. His safety and safety of others should be the main concern.

If no one was injured the police do not care to know, but you should inform the insurance company.

Dad said he will inform and has completely taken over the task from me. I am just looking at a bill of 10000 to 15000 INR, if not more. Unexpected expenses. As it is, I would have to do some painting, water proofing. With my father expenses just keep mounting. I could have paid dowries of at least 3 girls out of monies that he has used up across my lifetime. LOL

Here you can go through court and get them declared unfit to do things. You would have to talk to someone there about your options

That would hurt him, right? Nobody likes to be labeled useless. It sure is a dilemma. Here, we have to declare him insane. That is not a label anybody would want.

@vandana7 It would probably hurt him. But if its hurting his feelings or him seriously hurting someone else??? Maybe the police could be of some help since he is having accidents driving.

No. Only our car. But he is insisting that he will drive. He has taken the key and I don't know where he has kept it.
