Banana plantain difference
India

If you ask anyone on the street about a fruit called Plantain they would scratch their head or better still shown a Plantain fruit and if you ask people to name it. They would say it's Banana. But both are different fruits. Bananana is far more sweeter while Plantain has more starch and less of sugar. The fruit is grown abundantly in the state of Kerala state and some parts of Tamilnadu state in India. Plantain is called Nendran in Kerala also called Nendra Kai where Kai means fruit. Do you know Nendra Kai chips are more crispier tastier and healthier than banana chips.

@marguicha hi how are you. Long time not in touch. Yes ofcourse plantain and bananas are cousins just like Oranges and Sweet lime ( called Mosambi in India). Orange is sweeter than Sweet lime but look similar in size and shape.

@jayanth_77 The plantain usually looks like the attached image and this is why I say it looks ugly

Plantain fruits are not ugly. Infact their plants look the same and bear fruit whose flowers look identical. Plantain are longer than banana. They are good for weight loss as they have negligible sugar. More healthier option than Banana.

Banana, Plantain
@youless this is the over ripe one. Even over ripe banana looks ugly. But over ripe bananas and plantains have anti oxidants which are good for health. You can make banana cake, smoothy or ice cream with them and they taste really great.

Plantain, banana
Yes both are different in many ways but look alike . It's your personal taste as you find Bananas more sweeter when ripe while a ripe Plantain are mildly sweet. Particularly very good for people with diabetes.

@jayanth_77 If they are fried and used in curries, when you eat them they are NO MORE raw, they are cooked.

I think both plantain and banana look the same. As both grow abundantly in South India you might be knowing the difference. I have taken and like banana chips.

@aninditasen The banana chips you get in Rest of India and the Plantain ( Nendra kai in Kerala malayalam language) chips made in Kerala are different. If you are interested you can order them from my bio link as I am an online seller for Kerala Traditional Products.
