Our latest purchase - a birdbath

We went to the local hardware store last week and picked up the birdbath you can see in the photo. There aren’t many birds around here yet but I’m hoping more will come when all the construction work finishes. It is tucked in under a tree which I’m hoping will help make the birds feel safe. The green colour helps it to blend in nicely. There are no cats wandering the streets which is good so perhaps in time we’ll get more birds in the area. I miss the birds that used to come to our other house. There were always birds coming to bathe and I enjoyed watching them.

That's cool! Here in the Philippines, if you put like that in your garden, the next day, you'll see mosquito eggs.

This isn't good. It is due to the climate.

A drop or two daily of dish soap takes care of mosquito eggs.

True. Mosquitoes are quick to find pools of water.

I miss birds too. They used to come to my deck but not in several years. I hope they come to your birdbath.

I'm hoping they will one day. We do see a few around now but not many.

@jayanth_77 We have one tower in our apartment complex. And no building over four stories high. We’re in the suburbs.

@RubyHawk yes in my childhood there were thousands of birds in my neighborhood but now hardly a few visit. It's all because of modern mobile network towers and skyscrapers in our towns and cities

Nice that you will provide a nice place for them to wash themselves up. I am sure that slowly birds would know that there is a place where they can clean themselves.

@JudyEv I guess that is a start there. They may be a bit shy since it is something new in their place. I think that they will soon discover that it is safe to dive in there.

@rsa101 There has been a lot of construction in the area but now it's all coming to a close.

I'm hoping that will be the case. I do hear birds from time to time so hopefully some will find the bath.

@averygirl72 Yes birds are a treat to watch bathing. Usually it's the small birds like sparrows, crow or bulbul etc.. that come.

I have tons of birds in my yard and in our neighborhood, and my neighbors on either side of me have bird feeders set up to attract and feed the birds. I have a bird bath in my front yard, and the only birds I have ever seen use it are the cardinals that nest in my yard every year. Even though there are not tons of birds using my bird bath, I am happy that I can at least supply water to the nesting cardinals!

The birds here rarely need help finding food but water is a different kettle of fish. We always had birds at the birdbaths at our previous place. I'm hoping for something similar here one day.

@JudyEv I take it that water is more scarce where you live? Here, it’s the opposite. We have water everywhere.

@moffittjc Where we lived before, it was some distance between water points. Well, for little birds, I'm guessing it was quite a flight.

I hope you get birds visiting you soon. No stray cats sound good and safe for these birds. Today during my morning walk, I saw one stray cat running away with a small bird ( looked like myna) in its mouth

Thanks. Cats chase birds as a good source of food. Sometimes, if a cat is well-fed, it won't bother with birds but some just like the hunt.

@JudyEv Actually, cats are hunters by nature. So, even the domesticated ones don't miss the chance when they get one.

I have a birdbath in the back, and I have never seen a bird in it! I think there are just too many other water sources around here. Of course it doesn't help that it is usually dry...lol. I have a solar fountain in there too, but there is a lot of tree cover back there, not sure it gets enough light. Maybe I will fill that thing up today. Thanks for the reminder.

Water can be in scarce supply here, especially in our previous place. The bigger birds drank from the horse-troughs but the small ones appreciated the birdbaths.

i have been wanting to make one, but we have several outside cats, and I worry it wold turn out to be a trap. They'd drink, the cats would eat. It is lovely, enjoy watching your birds.

@JudyEv the one thing they do that I like is, eat small snakes. I am terribly afraid of any and all snakes. I know they serve a purpose, I am just terrified of them.

@mom210 I don't mind them but there are lot of people, some on myLot, who are terrified of snakes so you're not alone in that regard.

I have lovely birds coming to my garden though there are cats around. The birds perch themselves high on the branches where cats can't reach. They do eat my fruits which I don't mind.

Wow! I have a very similar one to yours if not the exact same one. Birds love it as I've had robins, blue jays, cat birds, and sparrows bathing in it. Even the birds need to cool off on a day in the low 90's F.

@JudyEv that's a beautiful bird bath. You can create your own using household items like a plastic plate fixed on a pole or even just a bowl fillef with water at a suitable height away from the cars. Birds like sparrows, Crows, pigeons love to Bath in shallow puddle of wate.
