Please tell a good driver story. We have good drivers, even in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Statistics tell us that half of all drivers are below average. Smart drivers are aware of this fact and try to maintain their distance from that particular 50%. Today, I encountered a driver who was trying to merge into my lane. He was coming from the right and it was unclear whether he would merge in front of me or in back of me. I accelerated and put my hand up. He merged behind me. We both waved as he passed me on the left. Are there good drivers where you live? What is your theory as to what makes good drivers and bad drivers?

There are both good and bad drivers but that is usually in the eye of the driver behind or next to him/her.

Oh, I do agree with that but not everyone would agree with us.

@rebelann What would their contention be? I think being aware of other drivers, and their intentions, is essential. Some see driving as "teamwork." Others don't.

No. Some communicate with others and make sure all are safe. Others do not.

Think 880 merges onto and off the freeway--short and fast--way too many drivers going waaaay too fast into the merges--

@TheHorse I am not a fan of those darkened windows--but it seems like the shootings happen randomly--I stay off the highways if at all possible--

Well, we drive in challenging conditions a lot. Wrong side driving, Lane cutting, over speeding and even jumping red lights. We have to manage driving in such conditions. Somehow it seems that the administration never does enough to be stricter in implementing the Traffic rules.

Our traffic laws are largely unenforced. I am not sure why. I would think enforcement would bring in revenue for the state.

@TheHorse Both employment and revenues. Why not employ Immigrants from other countries in traffic enforcement? Governments must give more attention to traffic rules enforcement everywhere.

@TheHorse Traffic Management is not a very high skilled work. It's more of an alertness and common sense.

We have more good drivers than bad drivers. The theory is simple, there are smart police people and jerks they do not change when they sit in their car.

@TheHorse The driver. What do you expect from someone who is a bully and has no respect for the others? When they drive they are not different.

@LadyDuck One of my wise professors said "Life is a projective test." I believe that driving tells us a lot about a person's personality. I could give examples, but I don't want to go on and on.

Who? The drivers? Or the police?

I think a good driver keeps his eyes on signs and traffic lights. Who keeps within the speed limit and is respectful of other drivers.

I try to go only seven mph over the speed limit and to stay in visual contact with those around me.

@TheHorse Then I’d say you’re a good driver, but you didn’t mention watching for signs and traffic lights.

My husband is not a good driver and causes me high anxiety when I ride with him. I hardly ever drive anymore (I now hate it); and I am a very defensive driver.

What makes him a bad driver? I have now driven over a million miles without ever causing an accident.

@TheHorse He follows too close, drives too fast and isn't as aware as he was when he was younger. He turned left and ended up in oncoming traffic about a month ago.

There are good driver's here, too. But, I think it's a matter of a person's temperament. How they drive can be a reflection on their personality. Someone who's typically impatient, is more likely to drive poorly. Having the mindset of everyone needs to be someone but I need to get their first, is never a good way to think.

A big part of the problem is that a large majority of drivers think they're really good. I have no idea why they aren't.

@TheHorse But even those numbers are wildly shiftable. A very good driver can temporally become a very bad driver due to some factor such as a bad day at the office or a fight with the wife. Even something as innocuous as driving to a dental appointment can put good drivers on edge to the extent where you can't tell them from a bad driver. Likewise, a bad driver can do a credible driving job when having a good day. There are many variables...Probably so many that there can only be estimates rather than concrete numbers.

Only 50% think they're "above average" drivers. And only 50% actually are above average drivers. The problems that there's no correlation between the two.

Some take very unnecessary risks and I especially hate those that sit really close behind other cars. Some of our big trucks do this. In an emergency, there is no way they could stop before running into the vehicle in front.

@TheHorse It's called that here too but I wasn't sure about there. I'm not too sure about any terms now. So many I thought would be 'common' aren't common at all.

@JudyEv Which terms are or are not common? Here in the US, a flash of brights means feel free to merge in front of me. I use that especially with big trucks, a I know they're experienced drivers. But in Italy, a flash of brights from the fast lane means "pull to the right. Here I come!"
