Dixie Dirt

It is a seasoning I got at the Piggly Wiggly in Port St. Joe in the panhandle in Florida last year while we were vacationing, and while this year we are headed that way, about 45 minutes farther along the "gulf coast," I am sure I will be able to find it. And I need some more. It's just good, and I use it on everything. Fish, pork, chicken. It's a great seasoning combination. Apparently, it comes from a company in Andalusia, Alabama. Dixie Dirt LLC, which is probably appropriately monikered. One of the nice things is that it is not necessarily salty with only 90mg of sodium according to the label, which is good considering I have high blood pressure and a salt restriction for which I take medication. The ingredients say it contains brown sugar, salt and spices. Of course the spices are probably secret for good reason. It is definitely going onto my "shopping list," and I may actually bring back two of these. It's that good.

That is a weird name for a seasoning.

@porwest Interesting explanation. I can't stop laughing at the "good old butt rubbins" phrase.

Supposedly the Dixie part comes from that it is made in Alabama and the dirt part is that it looks like dirt when you put it on the meat.

I have not seen this seasoning in my neck of the woods of Florida. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it in the stores.

@porwest We don’t have any Piggly Wiggly’s where I live, but I know they are more concentrated in the panhandle area of Florida.

@moffittjc It has always been a funny name for a store. We actually have some in Milwaukee.

It was odd that when I went to the site and looked up retailers, Piggly Wiggly was listed, but one in Alabama. The one in Port St. Joe wasn't on the list. Unless the two Piggly's are owned by the same franchisee?

Barbecue seasonings have the funniest names. It’s almost mandatory: gonna make some meat seasoning, you’d better give it a goofy name. There’s some at Bass Pro Shop called “Rub Your Butt” and “Rub Your Chicken.” Hope you can find lots of it!

It does seem to go hand in hand with meat—pun well intended. lol. In fact, there are billboards heading to a beef jerky place that have all kinds of interesting "slogans" as you get closer. One of them is "you can't beat our meat." It just goes with the territory I guess.

@porwest — yeah, “how PG-13-rated can we make this brand name???”

@FourWalls When I lived in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee, I lived on 75th and Becher Street. I always joked to the wife that I wanted to open up a meat shop and call it "Becher Meat." lol I am sure the name would not have made it past the cities approvals. Although right across from the Pick N' Save grocery store on 68th and National there was a company called, "Perfect Screw Company." So, maybe it would have been approved after all?

Any time we go into a "new" grocery store Pretty checks out their seasoning and buys new-to-us ones. Sometimes we really like them and sometimes not. I hope you can get more of that one.

@porwest The spice aisle isn't the first place I go, either. Usually, it's close to the last aisle I want to go down. Pretty, on the other hand...

I tend to do the same, but not probably to the extent you do. In other words, the spice aisle is not the first place for me to go. I may change that actually now that I think about it.

Glad you found a seasoning you enjoy with not a lot of sodium. Of course it is available on Amazon.

It's good that it's not too salty. Some of these things can be really salty.

There is one I liked from Rupena's, a local West Allis thing, which is quite good too, but it has 300mg of salt. So I avoid that one.

I use, or I used to use, Morton's Nature Seasoning. It was always my go-to for seasoning.

I may have to look for that. I think I have seen it in the store but I have never used it.
