Hunting for Hippos

I have been hunting for a house hippo. It is supposed to be a symbol of good luck. The trouble is that I can't find any. People in many states are looking but they can't find one for a reasonable price. According to Wikipedia, the house hippo craze started because of a Canadian PSA ad. It showed a hippo doing various things and was supposed to teach children critical thinking. Instead, they thought house hippos were real and pestered their parents for one. Soon everyone in the US and Canada seemed to want one. They are becoming hard to find. Where are all the hippos? People scour yard sales and thrift shops and come up minus a hippo. It is a frustrating hunt. Do you have a house hippo or are you hunting for one? How is it going? Do you think it is silly? Can you share a picture of your hippo?

@CarolDM I don't know. Perhaps I should message my Canadian friends and ask.

@akalinus This house is too small. Most of our decorative stuff is stored in the garage now.

I know the feeling but a tiny little hippo will not take up much room. It can live with my little ceramic cows. I love cows.

That's a trend I can honestly say I've never heard of. So I don't know what to tell you.

@akalinus Don't be. For everyone who has, just as many haven't.

I never heard of house hippo and surely never knew that they can bring luck. I do not have and do not want a hippo.

It looks like I am in the minority. I do want a hippo but am not letting it spoil my life if I can't find one.

@akalinus I see that you are also the only one to have heard about this fad. All the others who commented never heard of house hippo.

@LadyDuck Yes, you are right. A lot of people are looking for one or have one already, just no one here, apparently.

I've never heard of this but good luck with finding one. I don't think it's silly necessarily but I won't be looking for one.

Each to his own on this. It probably is silly but I hope to find one anyway.

really? this is new to me. I know that for some reason, elephants supposed to bring good luck in mexican households. same as hippos, i think. but i dont get it . elephants are not native to mexico, so where did it come from? im sure it originated from somewhere else. oh, and they all have to be facing/walking toward the same direction, to thier left, i think.

I have a few elephants at home, very small ones. I did not know they need to face the same way. That is new to me.

We did have the PSA campaign about House Hippos. It clearly stated, after the initial moments of cuteness, that House Hippos don't exist and not to believe something, just because you saw it on TV.

Only if they are ceramic or another material. I don't recommend live hippos because I don't have a bushel of lettuce to feed them every day. My bathtub is too small for a hippo.
