Warehouse Update

So, we still do not have a new warehouse guy and I have to say it is a complete distraction, although it seems to be suggested that there are at least 'prospects.'
The boss and I will both be on vacation the first week of August, and this was a bit of a challenge since it would be an entire week with one guy in the office having to handle everything. It's an impossible feat so we were thinking we almost HAVE to have a guy in place by then.
Now we have a temporary solution as we will be borrowing the warehouse guy from our Arizona branch for that week.
I am hoping that this decision does not breed complacency in the interim and we get to the end of that vacation still without a warehouse guy, having slowed the hiring process PRIOR to the vacation simply because a short term problem was solved that tamped the 'urgency' factor.
Even though I fully support the firing decision of the last guy, it does not mean I support dragging our feet on hiring the new guy.
We will see what happens.

@JudyEv You know it. I won't let it happen. Luckily I have the means to quit even if I do not want to right now. My health and well being comes first. I wouldn't even give it a second thought. I'd have my resignation printed, signed and on the boss' desk and be out the door in less than five minutes. Rest assured.

It becomes a difficult thing only in that there are generally only four us here in our branch. Three sales people and one warehouse guy, so it is almost a must. As frustrating as it may be. For me it is a much worse issue because I have back problems, and being out there hurling parts into boxes just does no good for me.
We also have a lot of parts that are upwards of 80 plus pounds—I don't touch those. I refuse to kill myself. lol

I actually had a conversation with him this morning about a strong prospect, and my sense is that the urgency, at least for now, is still there—which is refreshing and encouraging. Obviously it is not my purview to make demands nor to 'direct the flow of operations,' but at the same time, as it is widely known, I am also not one to be afraid to share my thoughts and provide little pushes from time to time as to how I think things should go.
It's not a power push, but simply applying to this job the many experiences I have from previous jobs where my direct position was TO direct the flow and make recommendations as to how we best implement a continuous process of improvement.
I think I am respected enough that at least my opinions and thoughts carry SOME weight, and I think I have made it clear enough that while I have personal motivations in everything I do, it is also understood that I understand that high tides lift all boats, and if the branch succeeds, we ALL do. And that's my main interest. To foster an environment that lifts the branch and in turn contributes to my own success as well.

@CarolDM So do I. The real problem is going to be, what are their retirements going to look like? If they have wasted years this just means they are going to have a lot less when they reach the finish line. We may actually one day have a crisis of elderly poverty. Of course, we probably won't be around for it. But it's going to cost someone for sure.

We had a kid come in yesterday who is on unemployment making $300 a week. The offer was $17 an hour with at least 5 hours of overtime and sometimes more and he said no. He'd have more than doubled his income and he still said no. I don't get it.

What hinders from hiring new warehouse man? I know many are looking for a job? By the way, what's the line of business all about?

There is an odd thing going on in America right now whereas people simply do not want to work, thus the major labor shortage we continue to have. I honestly don't know how some of these people are getting on considering the unemployment checks and stimulus checks are no more.

@porwest That's a lot of jobs. The jobless should avail of that.

I am glad there are at least prospects. I know of too many jobs that are going begging. It makes it hard to do the work.

I sure hope this gets resolved soon. When I was working at the Health Dept, we had employees fleeing like rats off a ship, but no one was ever hired to take their place. The work just fell to the rest of us who were stupid enough to still be there.
That's why I retired at 27 years instead of 30 like I planned.
Are you recovering from Covid alright?

At least you don’t work in government. One of my biggest frustrations when I worked in municipal government was how long it took to hire people in. I swear it would sometimes take 6 months.

You are probably in need of a vacation and are very much looking forward to it.
