My language-delayed child spoke a clear and concise two-word sentence yesterday!

I have written before about my young friend Jackie. She is "language-delayed" and was even branded as "possibly autistic" by someone--I don't know who--who interacted with her. Yesterday, or the day before, I mentioned how she gave some torn pages from a book to my book-fixing friend, Nicole. Jackie understands others' mental states. She is not autistic. But she does have delays in expressive language. Yesterday, she tripped over someone's foot while playing. She fell on her Pampers-protected butt. She looked me in the eyes, held her arms out, and said, "Help me." I reached my arms out and helped her up. It was the first really clear two-word sentence I've head her speak. I didn't make a big deal of it. I said, "Of course I'll help you up." But inside I was beaming. Can you see why I look forward to going to work?

How can somebody trip on foot and fall on butt? Pamper protected or not. I was trying to work the crime scenario ..thought she would fall flat on her cute face.. at the best twist and fall sideways. See...you should not use the word butt when telling anything to vanny... Evil Grin. I adore you for such gestures, but you know that...

She was moving backwards. That's why she did not see what tripped her.

@Plethos Sigh...you Americans have evolved a language code that aliens would not be able to decipher...just that they are not here as yet.

i think shes just late in speaking. ive seen it happen a lot in families where they dont encourage the child to communicate verbally. once they motion for something, its given or done for them. or perhaps the child was sign langaugeing and no one understood, or maybe shes a mime ?

I've taught her the sign for "more." When she wants more "agua" (her favorite word), she lets me know.

Interesting, as she needed help she talk. That means that she can know how to talk if she wants to.

@TheHorse - You really should. It looks like the child knows how to talk but prefers to keep quiet. There is a reason for sure.

@LadyDuck But she babbles away. I think she may simply not have enough "conversation" at home. But I'm not sure.

Can you see why I look forward to going to work? -----------I totally get it. I'm a chronic workaholic. I get depressed when it's time to go home from work.

Any activity ending with holic is bad. Sigh. I had a medical question I wanted to ask you. I spent a lot of time thinking about it, and thought this is something I should ask you but for nuts I am unable to remember what I spent so much time on. I have memory issues...it was not about pee, fart, poop, snot, saliva, ear wax...so don't get worked up.

That is so wonderful. My grandson is autistic and language delayed. Now he can say all done when he's through eating and I'm so happy.

That's awesome! Maybe now she'll slowly start communicating verbally to you or others. Maybe three words next time. Small steps. It's a good start.
