~ Foods that are rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants are useful in neutralizing free radicals while protecting the skin’s cells from damage. With ageing, the antioxidant level begins to drop; it is, therefore, advisable to eat foods rich in antioxidants like green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits, especially grapes and berries. Eating fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and herring which contain omega-3 fatty acids helps to maintain the skin’s tone and protect it from external damage.
~ Foods containing good fats
It has been found that switching entirely to a low-fat diet could have a drying effect on one’s skin- - -causing wrinkles and signs of ageing. Good fats like those found in avocados, nuts, flaxseeds and daily use of olive oil for cooking can be most helpful in providing the right amounts of nutrients to keep one’s skin lubricated and looking youthfully healthy.
~ Foods that provide proteins
Protein has an important role to play in one’s diet. Eating foods rich in proteins can be most helpful to keep your skin looking softer and younger. When proteins are broken down into amino acids, they repair the skin’s damaged cells and prevent sagging and the formation of wrinkles. Hence it is vital to include plenty of proteins like eggs, yoghurt, fish, chicken, flaxseeds and beans in your diet.
~ Foods rich in vitamins
Vitamins are a vital source of nutrients that help skin look young. Vitamin A is especially good for your skin as it protects your skin from the harsh UV rays of sunlight. Eating large portions of certain vegetables like carrots and spinach, red peppers, sweet potatoes and fruits like cantaloupe, papayas, peaches and mangoes are good sources of this nutrient. Vitamin C found in cabbage, broccoli and red and green bell peppers and in citrus fruits like strawberries, oranges and grapefruit, is also good for your skin. Vitamin E found in almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts is a powerful source of antioxidants that help skin retain its youthful appearance.
