What Makes a Comedian Your Favorite?

What makes a comedian your favorite? How do they look? Do they have to look a certain way to make you laugh? No, I don't think so. Do they have to hit home on some important issue that makes you laugh or you might cry? Yeah, that could do it for me. Or, do they have to be so outrageous and ridiculous that you feel bad for them and laugh as a release? That happens a lot to me. But, the one thing that I really love is the ones who hit you right where you live. Oh, yes. They seem to read you like a book or see through that veneer that you hide all that stuff under. They come right out of nowhere with some story that is so absurd it sounds like what happened to you last week. There's a funny anecdote. So, what is it that really makes you laugh?

All it takes for me is for them to be funny and witty at the same time. Comedians I have always enjoyed would be guys like Stephen Wright, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, Gallagher and guys like that. Richard Pryor was also very funny, as was Bill Cosby when he did standup. I liked Eddie Murphy too. Kevin Hart can be funny, but he's not "on" every time for me. A lot of comedy now has lost its touch a bit for me and there are few modern comedians who really do it for me.

Same here. The older ones hold true for me. I remember Steve Allen, Don Knotts, and another guy who did skits on early television. Also, I recall Jimmy Durante, Red Skeleton and some of the real oldsters.

You've named some of my favorites especially George Carlin, who I have seen live n Las Vegas at the MGM Grand, he made me laugh till I cried, Eddie Murphy, Kevin Hart, and Richard Pryor who paved the way for so many other comedians, Eddie Murphy and Kevin Hart to name a couple. The older comics are definitely where it's at. The classics will always be the best.

@sickofbeingick22 .........I used to just love Bill Cosby and was so sickened by what has come out about him. I can't listen to his stuff anymore.

I like the comedians who personalize things that happen in their life or make observations one can relate to. George Carlin was a great one for observing different things about life. Also, the comedians who can be silly like Rodney Dangerfield, Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters or Sam Kinison. They say Redd Foxx was really good at stand up. Loved his TV show. Other TV show comedy characters I liked were Benny Hill, Don Knotts, Abbott & Costello, Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. Facial expressions, always getting into trouble with their actions can make for a great laugh.

Yes, relatable humor is best for sure. George and Robin are the greatest I think. Don Knotts, and Carol Burnett are funny. These others you mentioned I don't really care for.

@dgobucks226 ..........That is very true. Some go in for slapstick while others like more cerebral humor.

I have seen Jim in some things. The other I am not sure. Not on Netflix I suspect. That is usually where I find my comedians.

Hey, anyone who could be as funny as Red Skeleton would make him/her my favorite but clean comedy is obsolete

@celticeagle Exactly. I had her name on the edge of my tongue but couldn’t express it. She is one funny lady. I read somewhere that she’s the highest paid movie star.

I'm not big on stand-up; but I like comedians that tell jokes about everyday life and don't use a lot of foul language and porny subjects.
