Along with the flashback to 40 years ago I’m also looking at songs that are now a half a century old. Most of these songs don’t sound that old, and you’ll probably hear them at some time this week on a “classic rock” station and sing along without any concern that they came from 1972. Here’s a prime example of a song that put “classic” in “classic rock.”
#9: Listen to the Music - The Doobie Brothers
Hey, there’s nothing like a classic rock song with banjo on it!!! Yep, Patrick Simmons played a banjo on the song.
This is one of those songs that I don’t think you can be sad while listening to. That was writer/lead vocalist Tom Johnston said was his goal with the song, making everyone happy because of the joy of music.
Hey, it sure worked for me!
Listen to the Music
Written by. Tom Johnston
Recorded by The Doobie Brothers
From Toulouse Street, 1972
(Today’s 1982 song: “Space Age Love Song”)
What the people need is a way to make them smile:

I think The Doobie brothers have my favorite band name ever.
I think they played the Rattlesnake Rodeo last year.

When I started listening to rock and roll, “Black Water” was a hit. And I had NO idea what the band’s name meant. Oh, to be young and innocent again.

@thislittlepennyearns — I know. When I was 15 I thought The Who’s “Squeeze Box” was a song about an accordion. Mother told me otherwise. Turns out, mama knew better!

Make them smile miss lady, no one smiles or has fun anymore and they wonder why people keep shooting up places. Doobie used to make everyone smile the joint or the band.

And in JJ’s case, BOTH the joint and the band.

This is one of my favorite Doobie songs, and it definitely is one of those songs that can put a smile on your face. And you are right about hearing it on the radio, I heard it on the way to work on either Wednesday or Thursday this week.

@FourWalls Which reminds me of Pharrell's song Happy. I'm not particularly a fan of his music, but you can't help but to sing along to Happy.

Doing what I can. I’m sure there’s one or two you may never want to hear again, though.
