A pretty gift from a friend

Yesterday we had three people come to the house for lunch. I used to work with the two women and it was really lovely catching up with their news. We’re all a lot older now of course. Vin and I gave them a little tour of our gated retirement village and they oohed and ahhed in all the right places. Good friends do that, don’t they? They both bought small gifts which was kind of them. However, my heart did sink a bit when I was given a cyclamen. It is a really lovely colour with some beautiful flowers and attractive foliage but I don’t think it is going to like the air-conditioning and I can’t think of where else I can put it. I hate to think that it will probably die within a month or two but I don’t think a positive outlook will save it. But isn’t it beautiful? I’ll certainly enjoy it while I have it.

It is beautiful and there is no reason why it should die in a month or two. Mom had cyclamens in pots on her balcony and they lasted for years.

@JudyEv Cyclamens do not like the heat. 23 years ago I planted wild cyclamens in the cooler area of the garden and they bloom twice a year.

@LadyDuck That must be a record for keeping cyclamens alive. Good for you.

That's good to know. They need a cool spot and I think indoors might be a bit too warm for them. Maybe I'll try it under the patio. It's in a bathroom window at the moment.

@JudyEv I was gifted a cactus. The girl that comes to clean my room told me she would water Mr. Prickles every Monday so he doesn't get over watered. He still looks very good .

I'll be doing my best not to over-water it which is the main cause of them dying.

@jeanena That's a good idea - to have a set day and stick to it.

It is very nice! Maybe you can figure a work around for it. Yesterday, the beautician had some lovely roses someone had given here. The blossoms were huge. I had never seen any that big.

I've put it in a bathroom window which should suit it. Plenty of light and cooler than anywhere else in the house.

The colour is really lovely. I will try not to over-water it which is the usual problem. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep it alive at least for a while.

It doesn't like too much heat. I might put it under the patio where it's protected a bit but it's not subjected to air-conditioning.

This is a nice gift. I wonder whether there is a pot for these flowers? If so, it will be ideal.

Good idea and I've actually done this. It's on the window ledge so has plenty of light and it's cooler there.

That was a gorgeous gift. How kind of her. I like the color most. like a purple heart. Could it last longer if you add aspirin to the water? Someone told me this actually works with roses, and I wonder if it would work with those as well?

The aspirin idea is a good one and I know it works with some flowers but this is a pot plant, not just a vase of flowers. It is easy to over-water these and it likes cool conditions.

It's a very nice idea. It's just that cyclamens can be hard to grow.

What lovely flowers, It says online that you can also put this plant outside, Here is the info I found because I was curious Can Cyclamen be planted outdoors? Vibrant ballerina-like flowers and intriguing foliage make cyclamen a popular choice among avid gardeners and homeowners. This tuberous perennial can be grown indoors as a houseplant or outdoors in rockeries and woodland gardens. Plants begin actively growing in fall, going dormant during warm summer months. Do you have a shady spot outdoors to put it in the ground. I love them and have had one or two in my life. They do not winter out in Kansas, though.

The cyclamen flowers in early spring and can't tolerate the heat,so it is in a dormant state in Summer.

I've put it in the bathroom now. I don't think it will like the A/C but the bathroom is probably the least impacted by the A/C. We have the A/C on heating at the moment and the cyclamen won't like that.

That is why I never give plants. Don't know what people like or if they have somewhere suitable for them. Besides, I know very little about plants!
