My review of Bright Idea 20 years ago on Epinions. Have you written on "lesser" writing sites? Do you still feel "dirty"?

As some of you know, I wrote for awhile on a site called Bubblews. I stumbled on the site when Epinions was dying, and always felt "dirty" when I wrote on Bubblews. It was a terrible site.
I also wrote for a spell on Bright Idea, another "dirty" site. It was also during the time in which Epinions was dying.
I will attach a review I wrote about Bright Idea on Epinions, just before Epinions disappeared.
Right now I am worried about MyLot. Activity is low, and many of my favorite writers have disappeared. I hope we do not go the way of Bright Idea, Bubblews, and Epinions.
I hope you find the review amusing.

Bright Idea: The Rattlesnake Gulch of the Internet West?
Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Some fun categories; potential for interesting discussion
Cons:Much poor quality writing; unclear objectives; venomous reading groups; no customer service; delayed payment
The Bottom Line: Bright Idea was an interesting concept, but poor execution led to its apparent impending demise.
I’ve been through some interesting cities and towns here in the Wild Wild West of the Internet, but the strangest has to be a site called Bright Idea, once a bustling little hamlet, and now little more than a ghost town.
A quick summary of my travels: For me, it all started with Epinions. Epinions might be Denver or Billings—-I’m not sure-—but it’s a big town. Like the famous NPR Minnesota town of yore, everything about Epinions is above average. The writing has always been good, the ratings fair, and the comments interesting. I’ve made several e-friends here. And then there was, and is, Writtenbyme, an artsier town than Epinions, inhabited by poets, short story writers, and others who like to write about their experiences, rather than products. Maybe Writtenbyme is Boulder or Missoula—it’s hard to say. I still visit there when I’m feeling creative. And then, for awhile, there was Shop O2, inhabited by the friendliest group of hard-core consumers I’ve ever met. They must have all been from Des Moines. They had names like Fredsmom, Charliesmom, and Tedsmom. They wore white hats. Together, we reviewed coffee, caviar, jeans, and baby toys. We rated each other highly. We made 15 cents per hit. And then the dam broke and the town was washed away without a trace.
And finally, there was Bright Idea, a site ostensibly devoted to the sharing of ideas, with the ultimate goal of collaborating on marketable products. Woah, was that place different! Rattlesnakes on the edge of town. Naked, dirty children running barefoot through the streets. Gun shots in the saloons. One church. Twenty-three bars. Dilapidated shacks for residences. No schools.
Let’s call it Rattlesnake Gulch.
The highest rating for a Bright Idea was five bulbs. The lowest was one bulb. Comments were allowed, but only occasionally used. A powerful posse, called a “rating group” (disguised as a bridge club) gave five bulbs to most of its members’ pieces, no matter how bad, and shot up the campsites of visitors who refused to adorn their drivel with good ratings.
One-liners like “Your (sic) gonna think this is silly but I wish I could desine (sic) a man who wood (sic) do my laundry and cook and listen” received four or five bulbs from members of the bridge club (Category: The Perfect Man).
But then power struggles occurred within the posse. Some members accused others of not reading their writing often enough. Harsh words were exchanged. Threats of revenge ratings were made, and often carried out with impunity, as all ratings were anonymous. One posse member actually conducted a “poll” of other members in an effort to catch and expose slackers who weren’t reading and rating enough.
Several Epinionators came over from Denver—or was it Billings?—to try and clean up the town, writing good pieces, and eventually starting a small school there. Outlaws, in the form of plagiarizers, were caught, tried, and convicted. But their pieces remained, stolen from Epinions, EHow, and other sites.
Most of the Epinions writers, fearing for their reputations, and the safety of their children, packed up and left.
Then, the High Sheriff decided to change the site. He said that only “marketable ideas” would be allowed. And yet, the categories remained the same! Those categories included things like: How to Get Off the Phone; Comments About Teaching; Music; The Perfect Man, and so on. Pieces posted before the “change” started disappearing from the site, removed in the dark of night by the High Sheriff because they were "not marketable."
More angry posts. More writers fleeing in anguish. And during it all, the High Sheriff had started keeping the tax dollars of the citizens of Rattlesnake Gulch, and providing no services. Wagon wheels rutted the roads. The courthouse fell into disrepair. Emails went unanswered. Nobody was paid for their writing.
A notice on the site promised that all would be paid at the end of June. In fact, no-one has been paid (one to three cents per hit, depending on your "level," determined by anonymous nightriders with no set criteria who carve a I, II or III over your door while you sleep) since February or March. A few quality writers still meet in secret at the edge of town, by the creek, swapping ideas and engaging in lively discussion via comments, but their numbers are decreasing.
Rattlesnake Gulch itself is now little more than a ghost town. The bridge club posse exists in name only, its embittered members firing occasional shot gun volleys across the dusty main street. Where once the most prolific writers would generate dozens of pieces per week, now, five pieces land you a spot on the “Who’s Hot” list.
Scorpions hang like dry leaves from the shutters of the empty saloons. The one church has been abandoned.
A few kind travelers pass through, set up shop, become disillusioned, and move on.
The wind whistles through the decaying buildings.
The end is near.

I miss Epinions so much. I eventually made decent bank there but the community was so amazing. I still have several people from there on my FB who are just friends now. (marytara, crankyunicorn, pjcai, alex diaz-granadios, freak369, uglybugg, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting)
I wrote on Bubblews concurrently with the demise of Epinions. I wrote on Persona Paper concurrently with the demise of Bubblews. I only discovered this site when Persona Paper announced that they were no longer paying for posts. I was all PEACE OUT and came here despite the fact that the earnings here are a pittance compared to what I used to make on Epinions.
Yes this site has slowed down and people are leaving in droves. Yes I've been annoyed to get messages from the new "Alice" telling me not to do this or that. In the grand scheme of things if this place disappeared tomorrow I would be just fine. I don't need the TOP SECRET AMOUNT OF MONEY that I get deposited in my PayPal each month. I'm already in contact with those here who I care about in other ways.
I hope that myLot hangs in there. We shall see.

This is sad to hear. I didn't realizing people were leaving this site due to new admin and other issues. I'll miss people who left this site and said goodbye. I'll miss all my friends here throughout the years too. I'll stick with Mylot for as long as the site exists.

I am (or was) a writer in my native language and never felt that these writings had anything to do with that. So I never felt dirty. It was only something else. First I learned to play in Pogo and I talked to people who were in the same "room" where I was. That was fun. I played pocker and did not spend a dime. At Pogo I came across a wonderful person who was here. I signed here under him and we talked here and there.
Mylot helped me a lot while I had my chemo. I could not go anywhere yet I had friends to talk to. And then mylot changed and Bubblews came into being. I don´t remember much how it was. But I do remember that they "forgot" to pay many times. Still, they paid a lot and I owe them my deep freezer and Tania´s pressure cooker.
And when Bubblews was dying, Mylot revived again. And here I am.
This has nothing to do with what I write in Spanish. But it is nice to have real friends. I thank this mylot for Coral ( @thesojourner )

If I’m one of your favorite writers I’ve been busy working in writing my first book. But I’ve been doing daily updates on it: plus it’s summer and my kids are home from school till the end of August. It’s been rough since my husband isn’t working right now:

@TheHorse people that can shift into being a wolf is know as a werewolf or werewolf shifter. Lots of shifter stories have the word shifter before were whatever like werecats can be any time of feline or can put the word panther or cougar shifter in front of it.
Pretty much I created me one world based on shifters with potential mates Vs the traditional shifter stories of you have a fated mate which in terms is a way of saying soulmate or other half of you that is possible to complete you. I hate that fate mates makes it sound like you have to be with them especially if they are marked like it’s a forced bond vs in my world marking doesn’t happen unless the other person/shifter accept but the bond starts at first contact a pull that wants you to be together but you have to choice if it’s the right one or not for you. So everyone one has potential or possible mates that they can date mark if they fit once marked it’s set for life.

I remember hearing about the site here. As for low activity, people are on vacation since it's summer or busy. I haven't heard anything about Mylot being in danger lately. It'll pick up again soon when people go back to work and kids are back at school. Hang in there.

I loved Triond and Bubblews. Expertscolumn is fair. I haven’t looked in for awhile. I’ve written on other sites I cannot remember now. I’d never heard of those you mentioned. All good sites gradually fade away. This morning I made a comment on a discussion that came up null so I put in another comment. Null again. I don’t know what’s going on here.

I was also on Bubblews. I still have an account on Persona Paper. I was trying to get my ChatAbout account off the ground when it closed down.

I remember Epinions , looked into it, all to corporate for me. Meaning their motives not true and not a purest but all these methodologies in the name of capitalism is pretty sickening. There has to be a better way to do it in these modern times.

@TheHorse Fair enough, You do not learn unless you try, but why things a certain way, good stuff does not seem to stay in service because we so corporate, my opinion buddy and glad you had a good experience then. My point over all remains the same is everyone so much about profit, they do not care what actually works in reality they want to lied to to fit their life's, so sad.

Let us hope the end is not near. I never make much here, but I am enjoying being on this site, When I looked back at a notebook I kept during Bubblews time, I saw that I was even getting as much as $200, and that was a great help while I lived in Latvia, That money was a great addition to our low finance situation, and then one day it all disappeared.

@TheHorse that is too bad but while it was up and running it was ideal for me SIGH, but I am happy with the little additions I made here on myLot, If anything happened then I would be devastated because I have been enjoying myself here and I like to see what everyone is up to, and there is really no other site online like this one where I know a great many people by name

Yeah. I'm not on here much myself. I just got back on to get in contact with some people who's writing I've enjoyed. Many people have been somewhat ghost. I do hope that this site doesn't disappear as well. I believe many may have left due to not much earnings &/or busy with life like me. We can only hope that people will continue to return &/or the site will continue even though others may have left.

I never heard of Bright Idea, I wrote for some bumbling, dirty sites. I heard of Epinions but never made it there. I wrote at a site called Gather, which would be your high class, well organized site. I wrote on Bubblews, but knew it was a bubbling stew of bait and switch and unsustainability. Wrote for Sidetick--just as creepy as any other crawly bug. I signed up for many, worked on a few, and still come back to the community here at myLot.
