A Jim look-alike

The photo shows a Jim look-alike. In about ten days, we are going to house-sit for a sulphur-crested cockatoo, Jim, and a dog, Dixie. We met them both a few days ago. Jim likes cuddles and snuggled into my neck. I’m a bit wary about cockatoos but Jim was very gentle and affectionate. He normally prefers women but Vince talked cockatoo to him for a while and Jim was then perfectly happy to sit on his shoulder. However, he also thought he’d like a closer look at Vince’s hearing aids so we had to discourage that.
Jim lives in a big cage but most days is taken from his cage up to the house where he has a perch to sit on. One wing has been clipped but if he is close enough to any wood he can be quite destructive. He has cockatoo food of course but his big treat each day is a tiny corner of toast with lots of butter.

@oahuwriter I think you are right. We were 'introduced' and he took no time at all to sit on my shoulder then was happy to go to Vince which surprised them a bit as he doesn't always take to men.

I figure if Jim saw you with Jim's human, then Jim would be ok with you & your husband.

Glad that he has a huge cage and that he can be taken out. He is really a gentle Jim.

@jobelbojel Don't worry too much. We can all only do as much as we can.

I don't know much about birds but Jim is a very pretty cockatoo. I also love his name
Spending time with him will probably give you lots to talk about here

Thank you for introducing us to Dixie and a Jim look-a-like. Jim sounds like he is very well taken care of. I wanted to know if they talk a lot and found out they pick up some phrases and words. You mentioned that Vince got through to Jim by speaking cockatoo. Where did Vince learn to speak cocatoo and what is it actually? I hope being in a strange house you will be able to sleep? I wonder where Dixie sleeps.

It was just a joke really about Vince speaking cockatoo but he did talk to him and paid attention to him and I think that helped Jim decide that Vince was a friend. The dog has a basket on the verandah but is allowed inside if we want to have her inside. She gets a bit anxious if there are strong winds.

Does it rain there too so that night bother Dixie too? Sorry, I did not get the joke and that there is no cockatoo language. I am sure there is and maybe cockatoos speak it amongst themselves like birds have their own way of communicating with each other. Did something happen to her once when there were strong winds or could it be because she hears so much better than we do or strong winds just bother her?

That house sitting assignment sounds like fun. Cockatoos are supposed to be very smart. You will have to know if it does anyhting brilliant while you are there.

We will need to keep an eye on him if he is out of his cage. He got into the house once while they were away and destroyed something in every room!!

Thank you for explaining how he is kept close to his perch. I wondered about that.
I've only been around a few birds in captivity, other than farm animals, of course. I don't have much experience with them.

@JudyEv I'm glad you got to know him and how to care for him while his humans are on vacation. I'm sure everything will go well while you're "babysitting" him and the other pets and house.

Haven't seen a cockatoo before. His feather is beautiful. It's interesting that he likes butter.
