"Are you from China?", asked an old lady on Edgware Street near Hyde Park in London. I said no. I am from Indonesia. It seemed she didn't know where it is.
Several days later, a woman aged about 45 asked me, "Excuse me. Are you Philipino? I answered no. I am Indonesian. Still in London. I was waiting for a bus. A young lady asked me in English if I know the way to Oxford Street. She thought I was a Londoner.
Last time in my earlier post, a beggar said, "Arigato," after I gave him a couple of coins.
Hope you all have a great day.

Well, and this may sound bad but it's true, most Westerners can't tell one Asian people apart. Once we get to know people from several of the Asian countries, we MIGHT be able to guess which country you're from... but I wouldn't bet on that.
I have mistaken a Latino man for an Asian before, too...

I guess being mistaken is okay as some people may look like similar. However, I enjoyed being asked such questions. And I am now used to it.

@yanzalong Would you be able to tell a person is from the US or from England if you're just looking at them without hearing them speak?
I don't normally ask people where they're from unless there's a reason for me to do that. And if there is a reason, I say the reason I'm asking before I ask where the person is from.

@MALUSE Yes, you are right about it. I remember asking two tourists where they are going. They just kept silent. Later I realized it was total impoliteness to ask such a question.

people not knowing where places are: someone asked me if Brazil is in Mexico and if that made my boyfriend Spanish... I am concerned for the human race.

Different human races are created in order that they can get to know one another.

@yanzalong Yes indeed exactly right. One time I received a postcard from someone in Indonesia...it was stamped too. I had no idea who it was from, but it was very nice of them.

I do understand how it feels. As per checking how you looks. Since your an Asian, you may look like a Chinese or a Filipino or a Japanese and still proud of being an Indonesian.

If i could choose,i never want to be a Chinese,it's an evil and crazy country, most of people are just like the Nazis in the Third Reich, they're the virus and parasites of this planet, especially their ruler-CCP.
Surely, there're still a few people who keep the hope and hold the light in this hellish land, they're the future of China, they're the Jews in this Modern Sodom.I wish God can bless them and save their souls out of this Cursed Land.

The old lady was asking me because we had a bit of conversation before. The second person who asked if I was a philipino because she probably needed a person to help her.

This is a true story. Since my relatives and myself are from the former Canal Zone in Panama, I get comments ranging from "You are Panamanian." and "For a native of Panama you speak fluent English."

At least you handle their confusion with great grace! I think if people grow up with people from other lands, then they end up not confusing different ethnicities. The internet has been a great place for me to learn about other cultures and peoples!

I can't blame them and nor can call them being rude. Most of the Asian countries like China, Japan, Indonesia etc share the similar body and facial features. It can be confusing for outsiders. Even people from North east of India have the same features.

@arunima25 yes there is a very minute difference. Maybe when they speak one can make out the difference among them.

I am still not sure how to react on this. I think we would also think or generalize the same way if we are in our own country by seeing their face. It would be difficult for us also to guess which country they come from.

From English accent spoken by him or her, I think we can guess where they come from. But for Asian people it is hard to guess.

Our physical appearance and countenance may resemble a variety of races. That's why we often mistook on the looks we got.
