My Son is Starting College Again!

My oldest son, who is 25, is starting up college again. He was trying to finish up when COVID-19 started up, and he hasn't been to school since. He's just been working from home on various things. But last spring he decided he wanted to go back to school to finish up his degree. His father and I were thrilled, because we knew he would never get a job that would support him independently if he didn't get his degree. So I drove him to his new university (transfer) this morning and picked him up this afternoon. HE LOVED IT! He said this university is so much better than his old university. It's also much, much closer to home. He also said his teachers were excellent, cared about the students, and he is looking forward to the rest of the semester. I am one happy mama! There are lots of jobs out there that would pay him enough to get his own home and pay his bills without getting a degree. But I understand how you might think those jobs are too "menial" for your son. (I've supported my family and owned several homes without ever getting a college degree.)

@gtdoss Oh, no problem. My dad raised 16 kids on a menial job. But we were poor as church mice, too. I have a degree in computer science. I got it when I was mid-40s, thinking it would get me a better job. It didn't happen, so now I use the knowledge to help friends on myLot when they have computer problems. *shrug* I hope your son does better than I did.

I didn't mean to say that not getting a degree means you do "menial" work. I never got a degree and neither did my parents, and they managed to take care of a family. I meant that the job he wants to do takes a degree (computer science) because there is so much competition for those jobs here. Sorry for the confusion. :)

And the best part is that it was my son who decided on his own to go back to school. We didn't need to nag him about it, LOL!

My son got admitted in a. great university for Civil Engineering and he will start college this month. Unfortunately, an announcement from the university came last week that they would still be doing online classes. He's kind of disappointed but im not because it means I could still have him home most of the time

Oh, I'm sorry for him to hear that the classes will still be online classes, but I'm happy for you to have him home most of the time. I felt the same about my sons, LOL!

That’s excellent news! I’m thinking of doing the same. I’m 32 and I don’t have a degree just a lot of certificates that allow me to have good jobs but I’m thinking of changing my path.

It is definitely getting harder to make a living without a degree, though it can be done if you've got a specific valuable skill (which he doesn't, LOL!)

Thank you! Oh, I hope so, too! His old university was known for being extremely hard, so it should be somewhat of a breeze for him at his new university!

Glad he was able to get back to it. I never went to college personally. Just would have been a waste of time for me. I have made more money without one than I ever could have made with one. Plus I avoided the painful debt.

Even in this age of internet a degree is still important is what I notice in the workplace. However if you are resourceful one can be successful earning online. Best of luck on your son.
