One younger coworker of mine is all-science all the time. He is obsessed with Jane Goodall. He volunteers at events she speaks at up and down the East Coast. She knows him and even recorded his outgoing voicemail message a couple of years ago. He LOVES elephants and, frankly, I don't know why he got his Ed.d in "educational leadership" instead of some kind of conservation biology. I don't know why he is teaching high school and not out in the field.
Anyway he first went to Africa almost 10 years ago. I thought he was crazy with the the flights, the puddle jumpers, the vaccinations he needed to get, the fact that he could contract Ebola, etc. It was his dream, though, so he went and had an amazing time. A year or two after that he went to Indonesia to see orangutans and whatever else there was to see. Then he returned to Africa with some coworkers. Now he is there for the 3rd time with his mother, a few other relatives, and at least 1 coworker and her mother.
The pictures and video are cool to see. They did a drive at a preserve in Kenya today and literally had a mama lioness walk within a foot of their truck with her 2 teeny tiny little cubs following. It was awesome to see the video so I can't imagine what they were feeling. I think I probably would have been so frightened that I wouldn't have enjoyed the moment as much as I did just watching it from here on the laptop.
They've also seen elephants. I don't know if they are going to the Giraffe Hotel. I know that he has been there twice before but I don't know if it is in Kenya or Rwanda. I'm happy to see that they are having a wonderful time. That isn't a trip I'd ever want to take but to each their own.

I would LOVE to go to the Giraffe Hotel. What an incredible life he has lived.

My friends have been to Africa and they really loved the trip. I have stayed in South Africa for three months and it's beautiful.
Your friend sounds so much fun, adventurous, and a Nature lover.

I couldn't do it, I know. But, as long as he's happy, right?

I believe this man missed his true calling. Teaching high school is only a means of income, for him. I'd be afraid, being so close to a mama lioness! She could leap at any moment, without any warning.
