I often talk about cooking/baking in group therapy because we are asked to discuss how we manage to deal with thoughts or urges to drink/use/whatever. I usually just say that I get myself into trouble when I have too much free time on my hands so I try to stay busy and most of the time that involves doing something in the kitchen. I mentioned the birthday cake that I made this past Thursday and everyone was asking why I didn't bring it in. I told them that I didn't realize that was allowed. One woman said she would bring in the forks and plates if I brought in the cake. I would up making a second different one over the weekend so I had 2 to bring on Monday. Everyone who tried it went crazy for it. I was happy to see that they enjoyed it and that it didn't go to waste. There was like half of one of the cakes left at the end of the session but the counselor said to just leave it because other counselors and the people at the front desk would definitely want to try it. Fine by me. Today one of the counselors saw me signing in and was like "OMG! That cake was amazing!" The clinical director was sitting next to her and said "oh so YOU were the one who made the cake that everyone was raving about? I am on a diet so I didn't try it but it looked AMAZING!" I told her that I would be happy to make another one. She said that she couldn't have it right now but "I wouldn't be opposed to one in like December". (I almost passed out because I do NOT want to still be going there in December) Today during group discussion I said that I distracted myself and kept myself busy with cooking yesterday as usual. I told them that I had made broccoli cheese soup, hummus, tomato-cucumber salad, poblano rajas, chicken for tacos, and homemade vegetable stock. They were floored and said that I should start selling the stuff on the side or start a cooking blog. One woman asked why I didn't bring in the broccoli soup. I told them that I had no plans to go into business . I cook/bake for friends and family when they ask me to but it is better when I do it on my own volition. It is still nice to hear that everyone enjoys what I make.

That's what I plan to do since Jim passed away. I never knew how much time I spent at the nursing home.

Maybe you could make a little side money to save for the house of your dreams by baking cakes once in a while.. I stopped baking many years ago but I enjoy a well done cake.
