Toss These Things for Better Health

We all have things we just can't get rid of. We all have things we think we need. But, what about the things we think we need but could be healthier without? Here is a list of things we might be better off without:
1. Old Tennis Shoes-- Yes, those old tennies need to go. Tennis shoes should be replaced every 300-400 miles. As they wear down they lose their cushioning and are no longer as capable of absorbing the impact of your foot landing with each step taken. So, then force is transmitted to muscles, bones, and tendons and can cause injury.
2. Antibacterial Soaps -- Experts say that this stuff is really no more effective at killing bacteria than the regular stuff. Triclosan, which is the active ingredient in antibacterial cleansers has been shown to alter hormones in animals and contributes to antibiotic resistance.
3. Diet Soda -- The artificial sweeteners(Equal, Sweet n Low, and Splenda) in diet soda has been found to mess with gut bacteria that play an important role in healthy metabolism.
4. Air Filters -- Indoor air quality is 25 to 100 times worse than outdoors. Many people suffer from asthma and allergies which is only made worse by mold, bacteria, and dust found in old and overused air filters. You are just blowing the stuff you are trying to get rid of with the air purifier back into the air.
5. Other things you need to get rid of are: mascara and lip gloss needs to be replaced about every three months, frayed and aged toothbrushes need to be replaced every few months, get rid of clutter in your closets and garage, old sunscreen needs to be thrown out each season, dirty contact lens cases, plastic cutting boards, stale spices, and old food.

We all could spend an eternity trying to clear out the things that we don't need or are no longer usable. I've been trying to downsize for years; and it seems that I'm not making any headway! We have over 50 years of accumulation!

That is a lot. I would try organizing first and then get rid of stuff accordingly.

Yes, we're pretty much on the same page as to the things you mentioned and getting rid of them in good time. The only difference is that I have two sons (grown) who have a habit of keeping their old tennis shoes, though they are wearing new ones, just as backup tennis shoes. The problem is that they always have 3 or 4 pairs of "backup" tennis shoes, LOL!

Need to find some way to get them to get rid of them. Pay them to get rid of them.

The only thing that I can still enjoy without compromising my health is diet soda (to some degree) ... I know it's not healthy but I can't have sugar and I really miss my little treats. Now I wish more companies would begin using Stevia!

Do keep an old pair of shoes for chores. But when its warm enough I go barefoot.

All the sugar you get in soda pop is not good for you either. That is why I am cutting back on all the sugar.

Fake sugar is the worst. I would rather have the real stuff.

I loved this post and I agree with everything. Old shoes, for example, can seriously injure you if you slip and fall. I was wrong to think that antibacterial soaps were effective. But in general, I believe that we have to get rid of what we don't use and no longer serve and, above all, avoid unnecessary consumption. I know that soda, with sugar or any other sweetener is unhealthy and even though I consume little, it's really hard for me to give it up altogether.
