Low cost carriers - like in the United States would be Spirit Airlines and Jetblue. Low cost or budget carriers often market their fares without the add-ons like meals and baggage allowance. Since these items on your ticket entails costs, it makes their tickets cheaper. Imagine booking on Delta or American Airlines for a flight with free baggage. The baggage is not actually free but is included in your fare. Having to do away with that would leave more room for them to cut down on the cost of the fare.

If it is a just a fwe hours flight, I prefer to the low cost airlines. As the time it is short and that's OK there are no fancy service or equipments in the plane.
