Such a lovely ear of corn

I planted corn this spring but some critters or other broke the stems at earth level. So I've ended up with only two decent stalks. I replanted, of course, but what came up isn't nearly ready for eating. And the two stalks bore two ears on one and one on the other. I picked this one today, but noticed it was crawling with ants. I was afeared they'd be all through the cob but after peeling, as you can see, it's a lovely ear of corn, and it's going to be my dinner tonight (along with some cucumber and tomatoes and yellow wax beans and maybe a potato, all from my garden). What are you having, @TheHorse ?

Oh Lord. There is a viral interview with a little boy that has gotten a lot of attention on social media this last week about corn.

AWESOME!!! You can wash off the ants and boil the few left. I can imagine that with salt and butter. YUM!!!

@TheHorse Probably, but I'm not reduced to eating bugs yet.

Ants are probably nutritious. Especially if boiled and salted.

Sadly, your image didn't load. I need to try to grow some corn just to see if I can grow it.

Alas, my corn here in the Eastern part of the East Bay is mostly decorative. But some are surviving both here (on my balcony) and at the preschool. We DID harvest some green beans this week, but they are small and bitter and "for educational purposes only."

"Small and bitter"? Sounds as if they didn't get enough water.

@BarBaraPrz Some teachers refuse to remind their kids to water our plants. OK, I said it.

This is a big and beautiful ear of corn. I immediately wash away the ants from the veggies.

That is a lovely ear of corn, too bad that your main corn crop didn’t survive. Maybe next year will be better.
