Oh my. Daughter has said that she would come visit us next year from Arizona. Hooray. But hubby wants to do a sentimental trip to the University with her and me. Fine. That means tons of walking. Ooooops for me. I told daughter that I would give the day to Dad. I'd find something else to do. Daughter visits are maybe three days long at most so this is a sacrifice on my part. Hubby brought up the W word. Wheelchair. I could make the trip with them if I had a wheelchair- me?? in a gulp....chair. I would have a fallback thing; a seat when I was too tired to be on my feet. The chair would ensure my safety and we would have no drama from me falling. Hubby was so sensitive and hesitant to bring up the W word. So we'll see what the future brings.

I use a wheelchair, a rollator and a cane. Nothing to be ashamed of. There are times, especially in the hospital, when I need someone to roll me the miles that it takes to get to certain areas of the hospital.

@LindaOhio Thank you for that. Hospitals and airports are beyond huge. Thank you for the loving answer.

I get where you're coming from. Recently, I had a bout with sciatica. It was so painful that it was very hard to even walk. My husband dared to say the word "walker" to me. It was a little upsetting, because I don't like to think of myself at 60 needing a walker. But then I realized that if the sciatica kept up like it was that I would have to do something so I could walk about. Thankfully, the sciatica slowly subsided after a couple of months, so I never did have to get a walker.

@gtdoss Sciatica sent me to physical therapy. I'd slowly used a treadmill and that set off the sciatica. Total hell. I'm sorry you are having issues, too. Sciatic pain is part of why I am again exercising in the pool. I guess a person has to do whatever it takes to enjoy life.

@gtdoss There is a gym not too far from me that has both a kiddo pool and a larger general pool. It is not a cheap deal but worth every penny to me. I do not have much balance so I use the shallow kiddo pool plus it is warmish water. I could use all the regular exercise equipment but won't cause it will hurt me. For now I exercise by myself in that shallow pool. Maybe later I will join others in the aerobics class.

Do you have a pool, or do you go to a community pool or someone else's pool? I would be in a pool 24/7 if we had access to one!

Aww I wouldn’t want to have to ride in a wheelchair but it would allow you more time to spend with your daughter. Sending you virtual hugs for whichever decision you pick.

That is not an issue, if you feel comfortable on W then it's fine. That's true you will be safe on it. Glad to know that your daughter is coming to visit you.

Considering how often you get visits with your daughter maybe this once you could agree to it?? You never know, it could prove to be a heck of a lot more fun than not going at all plus you wouldn't have to use the W all the time, would you?

@rebelann I love you and your thoughtful answers. I agree that going and spending time with daughter would be tons more fun than sitting at home. Yes. I get three to four days real time with her every 8 to years. Crazy and nobody is getting younger.

It might be a good idea for this outing. It needn't be regarded as a permanent thing.

@JudyEv The university campus is gigantic. I think we used to walk a good mile to class when we lived in the dorms and then when that class was over, we'd walk more to another building.

@sallypup In that case, I hope you'll seriously consider the 'W'.

My mother has a number of orthopedic problems and if there is alot of walking involved she uses a rollator. She is fine at Walmart and places like that, but anything that is straight walking for half a mile or more she uses it. Safety first!

There’s nothing to be ashamed of if a W keeps you safe and comfortable. That way, you can spend more time with your daughter and hubs together.

I know of many that use a wheelchair and they are proud to have them actually. I can only imagine the emotions involved. I hope you can perhaps embrace the help.
