Surprise Carrots!

I have been faithfully tending my tiny garden whenever I possibly can. It's been an odd summer for gardens--first, too hot, then no rain, then too much rain, more days of way too hot. Mostly, the tomatoes have suffered from the erratic weather. I get plenty of cherry tomatoes, but not very many bigger ones. I also have a lot of cucumbers--so I have been trading them with a neighbor or two and I get other stuff in trade, so far some squash, red bell peppers, green beans, and a couple of giant tomatoes. Today, when I was out doing my garden thing, I realized the carrots were getting really big, so I pulled some for dinner tonight. Then I had to clean one and eat it raw, because it looked so good. Do you have a garden or some plants in a pot? Sometimes, I grow vegetables in pots, too.

We have a bumper crop of bell peppers coming on and the cherry tomatoes are bountiful here. Nothing else lived through the terrible heat this summer.

I picked a few bell peppers this week. Two I have eaten in salads, I chopped up the rest and froze them for cooking later.

@MarieCoyle I have bags of dehydrated bell peppers that I haven't used yet. More than likely, we'll use the bell peppers as we pick them.

@DaddyEvil We loved stuffed peppers, often I clean and go ahead and stuff them, then freeze them and make the sauce when I take them out of the freezer.

Carrots, a great vegetable to plant in a garden. Nice sliced into salads! My garden did not have a good growing season this year. Maybe it was due to the weather like you mentioned. We had many days of continuous 90-degree weather in July and also some in August. Mixed in with the many thunderstorms and a lot of spring rain maybe that factored into the poor yield. Tomatoes were small in size and only a few peppers and cucumbers. Oh well, better luck next year.

@dgobucks226 Overall it seems to not have been the best year for some people's gardens. Weather issues as I talked of, extreme heat, and weird plants that grow big and bloom and don't produce anything. I've been gardening for years, it's very odd.

Despite the too hot weather and no rain I have too many tomatoes (several kind and sizes) bell peppers and hot chili peppers and pumpkins, that are already ripe. I have herbs in pots on the balcony and two plants of tomatoes that have grown inside.

@MarieCoyle I am going to dry some pounds of tomatoes tomorrow. It rains today, a blessing for the garden.

Look at you and your carrots. Good for you. Nothing here but a few flowers. My Dad had what he called his "pot garden" a few years before he passed. He enjoyed it very much.

Not right now, but I like to grow leaf lettuce in the fall, I might do so. The deer haven't been around so maybe they will be safe.

I planted stuff everywhere this year. We dug up a little garden bed in the tiny back yard. Plus, I planted carrots and onions in the flower beds. I decided it didn't matter if it was just a tiny spot, as long as I could grow something to eat, it was good. I hope your lettuce grows well.

I wish I lived somewhere that I could grow things inside in a greenhouse type of situation, but I don't.

We have had limited success with planting in containers. For some reason, our veggies come out kind of deformed, LOL! Also, we live near Stone Mountain in Georgia, so we have red clay in our yard instead of dirt, so it makes it that much harder to grow a decent garden. There are some very expert people who can grow a great garden here, though, but we haven't had a lot of success.

I've lived in Texas before, I remember trying to grow a garden there. Not easy, I totally get it.
