Paying for Food

Hi, here's a quick question. If you were living under someone else's rule and the rule was to pitch in monthly for food of the weeks do you still have to buy your food? For me, in this case, me and my parents eating habits are different, they eat much of the healthy side and me not unhealthy but not that healthy either. I give my mom for food, yet she still has me buying my own food with my other earnings, despite the fact I give her for food + more. Are they right or time I need to talk to her Thanks

So you are pitching in for family meals during the week. But when you say you are also buying your food what do you mean by that? Do you mean snacks and other food that you might want to eat? Because if so then yes you should have to buy other food.

So me and my dad gives here to buy groceries.... vegetables, tofu, etc..things for dinner, breakfast. The only difference is my dad gives her partial weekly payments for it I pay her full amount monthly. But the food from the grocery that I give her supposed to go for the groceries but it happens that when I want to buy something for dinner, I have to pay for it myself. Thanks for the reply

@fearjp well your dad is part of a couple with your mother and you are their 35 year old child that is paying for the food in full for yourself. Do they cook? If it makes you uncomfortable you can always pay for your own and do your own cooking. I skirt the poverty line at 24 and am paying bills, internet, phone, rego, food etc in a house that isnt mine.

It just depends... Your profile says you're a grown adult. If food is all you're helping pay, then I'd keep quiet and pay it. Your parents could also ask you to help pay rent and utilities, too. Most people your age live on their own and pay full rent, all the utilities and for their food. You're getting off very lightly if that's all you pay in a month.

@Fa_Maverick But you aren't 35 years old and living with your parents, either.

Honestly though I cringe at the amount I have spent this week just to be able to eat, do uni work and have phone service.

You need to discuss it with your parents and you all should decide mutually how much amount you should pay them.

If you are already giving to your parents money for food, you should not be requested to pay more for your food. Stop giving them money for food.

I am employed before and had a good job but when my mother got bedridden, my children told me to resign and took care of her and i did that until she passed away. Since then i became jobless. Now it is my four daughters who shoulder all of our expenses for the food, bills, house rental and everything. They even give me an allowance every month. Sometimes they also buy me things that i want or need.

@fearjp maybe it is best if you can open up about it with your mother. Let her know how you feel.

That doesn't sound fair to me. Do you also pitch in for utilities?

You gave your mom the money for groceries and all 3 meals but did she cook your share too ? You did not eat because you prefer take away food? If that is the case , ,you have to make a decision. Pay for her the groceries and bills only. No need to cook your share. Then you can cut down on the money you give her. Otherwise, do not bee picky,, just eat what she cooks.

I know, I am not picky and I can cook for myself and yea (even as a younger kid) I eat whatever is served. Technically I eat anything but at times I'd like to have a certain meals sometimes (like sometimes people crave greasy food at times). But yea, they said for food recently as well and I understood but figured since the food is added as a priority for me to pay along with some others, shouldn't I be allowed to pick and not that the money I used to pay for my own I give it to my mom. Thanks for the reply

Well, your parent's house, their rules. Maybe you could discuss the amount they want you to chip in and point out the food they are buying with your help is food you do not eat. Perhaps you could negotiate an amount agreeable to you and your parents that would be more equitable.

I think anyone should be contributing, but I also think that those contributing should also have some input in what gets made with the contribution. Just my two cents.

we must not always ask others help for eating foods . it will put burden . we can , if we really want to eat or drink useful.
