Can bring your own cake but pay a fee

Went to a restaurant last night for hubby’s cousin’s birthday. His aunt brought two delicious cakes from the French bakery to the restaurant. She was told that if she wants the cake cut and out on the table to be consumed by the guests she’d have to pay $3/person to do that. There were twelve of us so it would be $36 to have the damn cake cut and be eaten.
If she didn’t want to pay that she could order some dessert from their menu and then the cake cutting would be free. I’ve never heard of such a thing before. If anything charge a set fee to have the cake cut and allowed to be eaten (sort of like a cork fee for a bottle of liquor you bring to a restaurant.) Don’t charge per person.
His aunt ended up ordering four pastries for the table to avoid paying $3/person charge. Wonder if the pastries cost more or less than $36.

That's their policy. She has to abide with it. Ours is different No one is allowed to bring outside food to the restaurant.

DOesn't surprise me. If they can find a way to make a profit most places will take it.

At least they allowed us to have the cake. They didn’t allow us to open and drink a bottle of liquor, even when we offered to pay them. They don’t allow you to bring your own bottles. But that’s understandable.

Well, they want you to get their dessert as that’s how they make money. So if you bring your own it’s understandable they will charge you but it should be a set fee and not per person.

That's a normal charge for a restaurant. They want to sell their own desserts, not encourage people to bring in outside food. You can't blame them for that. (I'm sure before they started charging that way some people took advantage of them and only ordered a minimum item and then expected the restaurant staff to wait on them/their birthday party as if they'd ordered a full meal with desserts.)

They should have told her right away there’s a fee if you bring your own cake. Unless she didn’t ask when making reservations.

@lovebuglena I would bet she didn't bother to ask and assumed the wait staff would handle it for her.

That isn't uncommon. It costs money for the restaurant to provide the plates, forks, etc., to have someone cut/plate the cake, to collect and clean the used dishes/forks. Paying per plate makes perfect sense since it is a lot more work to cut/plate 20 slices of cake than it is to deal with just four.

That sounds crazy to pay that much to cut the cake and I realize that the restaurant wants to make money if you bring your own cake but $36 is nuts.

If we had more people it would’ve been even higher.

I've heard of this before. It's a shame that they couldn't eat the cakes.

We all ate the cake but hubby’s aunt had to pay however much the restraint’s dessert was to avoid the fee.

The cake was bought specifically for the birthday dinner. Couldn’t not have them cut it and bring it out.

I think so, especially if you have a large party. And they didn’t tell her about this charge ahead of time when she made reservations for the dinner.
