This would apply to unnecessary splurging just for the reason that it is on 15%, 30% discount. We may have saved on the discount but we still spent 85%, 70%. That means money out of our pocket.
But we can use this same clearance sales if we really schedule and planned it out that we will buy the things that we need.
Watching the shows on hoarding, I know that they have emotional problems that they are trying to fill the void, but boy they must really have a lot of money to be able to buy these things. Feeling secure in what you have be it things relationship time is a wonderful feeling.
I remember a time when I could survive daily without airconditioning or a fan but now we use it all and it consumes most of the electricity so the bill is higher.

@jstory07 That inventory wouldnt have much space in our house. You are lucky to have storage space. I think that is a smart move for extra money.

I only buy what I need and not what I want. The moment I buy what I want it would really be something luxurious, would have investment and resale value and something that would last a long time if not a life time.( It's very rare for me to buy what I want because I save for it and most of the time it's not on credit or make me go into debt)

We use our AC freely too. We want to be comfortable. We try and only buy the things we need.

Sometimes I know I am overdoing frugality when I am no longer happy.

I look out for things on clearance and discounts. But I would buy only what I need and not because it's on a great deal.

@yoalldudes You have said it so well...folly of consumerism. I mean we don't actually need so much, that's a compulsive buying due to all the wants and trying to fit in.
I bet that you would agree that minimalistic approach gives peace of mind and is therapeutic in many ways.

I am aghast when I remember how in the past I would keep buying clothes to compete. I am not in a pageant smh. The folly of consumerism.

MANY people get caught up in the "it's on sale" mentality. But you are exactly right. Unless you absolutely need the item on sale you are buying, if you buy it, even at a discount, you are not technically saving money. You are spending it.
What most people don't always understand, as well, as "sales" have always been a tool of marketing. Items are typically marked up over retail value and then put on sale at real value, meaning even though it says it is on sale, you are still paying full price for it.
The best way to save money is to fold it up and put it back in your pocket...every single time.

@yoalldudes Retail markups are actually small compared to some other businesses, but it depends on what the item is and what the retail establishment is.

That is true. Imagine they can cut off price by 70% meaning they have such a huge mark-up.
