Is it fine not to turn off your laptop?

I'm always using my computer all the time, even though I'm not in front of my computer. There are still programs that I have to run. I was wondering if it is safe not to turn off a laptop. I made some research and of course I saw different opinions contradicting each other. It comes to my mind to ask it on this site. However. I'm hoping that the admin or someone will not delete this.

Most laptops and computers need to be shut down about once a week and restarted. Otherwise they will become laggy and will eventually just lock up until you restarts them. If you wait that long, though, you might lose stuff from the memory.

Thanks! I have to keep my laptop running every day. However, I always shut it down for at least 4 to 5 hours every day, and makes me regret it because there are lots of programs that I have to run even though I'm sleeping.

@tech40 You don't have to shut it down for more than a few minutes before it can be started back up again. (5 minutes is plenty. But it does need to be shut completely off for that 5 minutes.) You're welcome.

@DaddyEvil I agree. Even the desktop needs to be shut down. I agree with laggy. At work, prior covid, we take turns using the pc for day shift and night shift. I usually leave notes on my desk that whoever will use the pc, to shut it down after use.

I agree with @DaddyEvil, a laptop needs to be shut down and restarted once in a while. Server computers have to run all the time, but they are built to run 7 days a week 24 hours a day.

If I'm going to run it for a week without turning it off. Then how many hours should I wait before I turn it on again?

@tech40 I would wait just a couple of hours, the time that it totally cools down.

I think most of the time it is OK. But I often turn off my computer if I don't use it. Of course if it is running programs like downloading, then I won't turn it off. I will just turn off the monitor.

@tech40 Half a day. I turn on my desktop at home at night and I will turn it off before I go to bed. Next day I will turn on my laptop in the office and then turn it off after work.

How long do you put your computer off before you turn it on again?

I think it needs a break. I think this break is needed.

Indeed. That's why I'm wondering what's the best thing to do without putting my laptop at risk.

It's necessary to shut it down when you're no longer using it. If it keeps on and there's a sudden power outage, your lappy may be affected because it's not properly shut down.

I used to put my laptop on sleep mode every night. Now, I turned it off every night.

Putting it to sleep is also a good way to put your laptop on rest without closing your programs.

I shut it down everyday, one is for me to save power consumption and battery from draining. Though right now I use desktop from the company.

For whatever it is worth I always have mine on, and always plugged into the charger. I am strange, I guess, in that my laptop is pretty much never in my lap, but always on my desk. My wife always kids me, "You know that thing is portable, right?" lol. But I have never run into problems, although from time to time I do restart it. But not often.
