Here we go, with the thoroughly confusing list of favorite songs that weren’t U.S. hits — that is, they didn’t make the Billboard top 40. They are, however, well-known despite not being a “hit” in the “traditional” definition of the term. Still confused? Me too! Let’s sing along!
#10: You Can’t Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones
The song, in its entirety, is seven and a half minutes long, so that could explain why (a)AM radio wasn’t too keen on playing it (the “edited-for-time” single version still clocked in at five minutes) and (b)FM jocks ate it up.
There’s another reason, too: this is a pretty cool song! I love how it starts with the choir (and ends with it), then the soft, acoustic guitar part, before going into a full-blown Stones classic. Extra kudos to Al Kooper for some great organ playing.
Picky Wedia says that orange face used this for his campaign rally theme song in 2016, and the Stones were none too pleased, threatening legal action. The campaign switched to “YMCA” by the Village People instead.
In hindsight, what a perfect song title.
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Recorded by The Rolling Stones
From Let It Bleed, 1969
Billboard single peak position: #42
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy (Miller, the Stones’ producer and drummer on this track):

Yeah, my mom sang it to me, too. It’s the motto of life.

This song should be America's least favorite song since we all spoiled and entitled. Come on that was funny. It is one damn neat song though. My friend in Marines was from where Jimmy is from. Went on for days about him and he was not even the type of dude that bragged until Jimmy showed up.

@FourWalls Haha, hell no be Abraham Lincoln who is that guy and they showed Teddy Roosevelt speech in great depression on Morning Joe. Gave you goose bumps and now these people have no clue what freedom means. Its rather sad.

Tell me about it! I looked at the time and length of the queue for seeing the Queen’s coffin last night: five miles long, eleven-hour wait. Can you imagine an American doing that for something that’s not a Black Friday sale????

Linda Ronstadt later sang, “What you need, what you want, are not the same thing.” The Stones obviously disagreed.

I like “Ruby Tuesday” a lot too….the song, not the restaurant. I haven’t found myself hungry enough to eat there a second time.

Well, you do have to consider that the #1 song in 1969 was by a cartoon group (“Sugar Sugar” by the Archies), so….

We all have to be reminded of it from time to time, because, as Crossbones said, we have this “entitled” mentality in the U.S. (especially).
