I really enjoy listening to a cleverly written tune by an artist/band who takes a break from writing about serious issues to record a song with a funny/silly/unusual lyrics or title. Afterall, even a serious songwriter has a sense of humor. So, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the number of songs I really liked when putting together this series. Let's see how many of them you find enjoyable as well...
Alcohol is a big part of the rock n' roll scene so it's not surprising that artists find clever ways to allude to drinking, drinks, and beverages in their songs. The Eric Clapton led band "Cream" came up with a usually titled song called "Strange Brew," which may refer to either drugs or a woman that's killing what's inside of the singer. Anyway, this tune is classic 60's psychedelic music by "Slowhand and his mates..." Enjoy!
See if you would put these "thirst quenchers" below on your music menu.
Comments, musings, your own favorite funny songs and trivia welcome...
1. Strange Brew- Cream
-For 3 guys who did not get along very well they made some great music in their short time together. This tune came out in 1967 at the height of "The Summer of Love."
Fun fact: This song and the album "Disraeli Gears" was produced by Felix Pappalardi, who later formed the group "Mountain." Sadly, he was killed in 1983 by his wife in a domestic dispute.
2. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer- George Thorogood & The Destroyers
-This tune is a blues rock cover combining a medley of John Lee Hooker's "House Rent Boogie" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", the latter a song written by Rudy Toombs for Amos Milburn. It appears on Thorogood's 1977 debut album along with other blues songs.
I highly recommend you give this tune a listen!
3. Boat Drinks- Jimmy Buffet
-For funny-titled songs Mr. Buffet sure can "eat, drink, and be merry." He just might be the king of unusual titles in my opinion. Some of his other interesting titles: "Volcano, A Pirate Looks at Forty, Fins, and Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes."
Oh, and did I mention "Margaritaville,' which fits nicely into our alcohol/drinking theme.
*Do you recall these songs? Like any of them?
TRIVIA CHALLENGE
***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play along. See if you can guess these selections and the bonus... Words in "quote marks" provide valuable clues!
Name today's tune, artist or facts:
1. George Thorogood recorded another drinking song in 1985 and this one has the word "drink" in its title. It is a humorous song where the "singer's pals are alcohol." Here are a few he mentions in the tune's lyrics: his good "buddy Wiser (Budweiser), his pals Jack Daniel's and Jim Beam, and the Walker brothers: Blackie and Red (Johnny Walker Black label and Red label)." Usually drinking is a social activity, but in this song, there are "no buddies sharing his alcohol." No George prefers to "________________."
-Do you know the name of Thorogood's other drinking song?
2. Now this is not a funny song, but it does have a "drink for a title." This group named itself after the "National bird of the United States." In America, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is the best-selling album of all time. "Take another shot of courage," is a line from this song meaning that "drinking this brand of alcohol" will provide you instant courage when approaching the ladies in a bar. If you "add some OJ" that drink is referred to as a _____________________ (the song title).
-Can you name this bird-titled band and their love song referencing a type of mixed drink?
3. (Bonus) Eric Burden of the group "The Animals" recorded this song with the band "War" in 1970. The tune's title refers to "an alcoholic drink people will sometimes enjoy complementing their dinner." This drink also goes great with "cheese" and crackers. In the song's lyrics the alcohol "is knocked over" or "_________." And with those clues you have this unusual song title...
-Can you name the title of this unusual song involving a strange girl and a tipped over bottle of booze?
Ok, "no funny business" when solving these songs and artists. If you're stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. Or as The Temptations would say... "Don't be too Proud to Beg."
Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! I will return with a new edition soon. Hope you can wait till then, lol. Stay tuned...
