Camper Journey #5—Despite the #4 and Final

It has felt like playing that age old game with the forget-me-not flower. "We have a camper, we don't have a camper. We have a camper, we don't have a camper." Well, it appears we do in fact have a camper. Well, for now. Who knows if this story is quite over yet. The long and short is that we were getting some weird financing offers. Ones that blew my mind and frankly blew the deal. At one point they came back and said, "We can do 17% for 10 years at $800 a month." For a $30,000 camper???? Are you out of your mind??? That's $96,000 by the time I pay it off!!! We walked, and rightly so. But of course, they still wanted to sell the camper. So, we went back and forth, and I basically told them how this was going to go, because they needed to sell me a camper far more than I needed to buy one. To make a long story short (I can fill in the blanks in the comments), they finally came back with 8.75% for 10 years at around $400 a month. Okay, now we have a deal. We go back next Saturday to get the truck work done we need to do to pull it and get the papers all signed and take delivery. But what a ride to the finish line. Yeesh!

@porwest I didn’t realize you were getting a camper that has to be pulled. I thought it was an R V.

@RubyHawk I thought about an RV, but for the money and the convenience, right now I think one you pull is more economical and useful.

I won't be fully convinced until it is on the back of my truck and we're pulling away from Camping World. lol

Good luck. Hope it works out in the end. 8.75% is way better than 17%. Could you have gotten them to go down even lower?

To be honest, we do not intend to keep the loan. It just gives me a little time to work out a better payoff plan ultimately. The camper will likely be paid off in the next 6 months. This just buys me some time. So, I am happy with the short term numbers.

@porwest It's good that you can pay it off when you want and not have to do it for the whole amount of time the loan is for.

@lovebuglena I never keep loans to term. It is just a rule for me. I dislike debt.

@porwest I agree. That's what makes it all the more real, when you physically have it.

It has been an interesting experience so far. I say so far since I don't know if it is quite over yet. It's like the wife said, "I won't be totally excited until the camper is attached to the truck and we are driving away." lol

Yep. It looks like that is the case. I am getting excited. But of course the wife says she won't be excited until the camper is attached to the truck and we are driving away. lol

I told Gator in our last conversation I was probably not his easiest customer. He actually said, "the smart ones rarely are." I am going to take that as a compliment. lol

@CarolDM Me too. Although, like the wife said, she won't be excited until the camper is attached to the truck and we are driving away with it. lol

I thought so too. And of course we will pay it off long before the note matures.

@Nakitakona Yep. I don't like owing people money. So paying it off sooner is better than later.

There is always the possibility something could still go wrong. I am still fully prepared to walk if necessary.

Some people buy on terms but never bother to work out what the total cost is going to be. Good luck with getting to the finish line this time.

Yeah. Many do. It is important to understand all the costs. If you don't do the math you can certainly get stiffed.

This process was more than interesting. A complete learning experience for sure. Now the fun will be learning how to camp and pull a 39' camper. lol. My work is far from done.

Me too. We still have a lot of money going out, but in the end it is worth it. $10k down and we'll spend probably another $2k-$3k prepping the truck and whatever the wife comes up with. She's talked about wanting to 'decorate.' lol. That could cost some dough too.
