So is Trump's amazing wall not working?

He loves to brag at his MAGA cult rallies that he "built the wall". Mexico never did pay for it though the Biden administration has made a deal with Mexico to reinforce border security.
People are flipping out about illegal immigrants crossing the border but, um, didn't Trump's amazing WALL stop that? He keeps saying that it was built. So was he lying and it wasn't built or is it just ineffective and people keep entering the country?

The wall was never fully funded by Congress, so it never got completed. There are huge gaps along the border where there is no wall at all. But, with that being said, I don't believe the wall would have ever worked even if it was completed. The border is just way too long for our border agents to constantly monitor to make sure people are figuring out how to climb over, through, or under the wall. It may have slowed people down, but it wouldn't have totally stopped immigrants from coming in.

@moffittjc I partially agree with this, probably to the surprise of some. The wall would not have solved the problem.
BUT, it should be pointed out that Trump never said the wall was THE solution. It was PART of the solution.
Trump's immigration policy was multi-faceted. What he did was allow the border patrol to enforce laws already on the books. He also funded the border patrol and upgraded equipment and sought to find better tools for them to be able to do their jobs and do them more effectively.
This was actually key to his policy.
At the same time, he was working with Mexican officials to find solutions we could employ in Mexico as well to curb the flow and provide for better standards in Mexico itself to reduce the incentive to flee.
It was part of his new deal to replace NAFTA in fact, which would open more trade up with Mexico offering the possibility of more and better employment opportunities there.
I have long said that the best investment and effort the United States can make to impact illegal immigration the greatest, is to help Mexico to become a country that people don't want to flee from. We don't have Canadians jumping the border. And there is a reason for that.
If we can help to make Mexico as thriving and as successful as the people to the north of us, we can be PARTNERS instead of presumed enemies. Closing the border is not so much about building barriers between our two countries. But rather, building a relationship that both sides can benefit from.
But in the meantime, we still have to build walls until we can make that happen. While it is a silly analogy, until we stop burglary, we have to keep locks on our doors. If we can stop burglary?
We may not need locks.

My own guess is that it was ineffective in many senses. AND expensive too.

The number of border crossings under Trump DROPPED by 70%. That's a fact. He did it by not only beginning to build a wall, he did it by fully supporting and funding the border patrol and actually ENFORCING U.S. immigration law already on the books.
When the border patrol was allowed to do their job, and when illegals were immediately sent back, there was little incentive for people to attempt to cross.

@porwest As I see it in my country, the problem is not immigration or illegals, but bad people. And they know how to get what they want. The amount of drung in my country has been worse every day. And it has nothing to do with immigrats who are fleeding from poverty and political problems in other countries near mine.

@marguicha That's not the point. We can't just take in anybody who wants to come here. For one thing, we can't afford it, taxpayers should not have to pay for it, and we have no country or standards or culture if we just open the doors and let them all in.
I feel for these people. But at the same time we can't just let them all in.
It's like your house. If you left the door open and anybody could come in, eventually it would not be your house anymore.
We keep our doors locked, and when someone knocks wanting to come in, WE get to decide to open the door or not. That is how a civilized society works.
